I was saddened to read of the passing of Dodge Morgan this past weekend. Dodge was 78 when he died but will be remembered most for his record breaking solo sail around the world in his "youth" -- when he was in his 50's -- aboard his Hood designed "American Promise". Dodge was uniquely New England; combining insatiable optimism with deft risk taking that, despite being a bit of a curmudgeon, served him well in business as well as sailing. Every once in a while on those good days sailing I think about the "what if" of sailing globally. Then again, on those not-so-good days when the weather Gods are working in cahoots with Murphy I think about the same "what if" and my admiration for those, like Dodge, grows even stronger. While Catalina's are, for the most part, coastal boats, I think we lost a kindred spirit in Dodge and know that America lost someone who did not forget his promise!
