Really don't want to use the acid that WM sells this year for cleaning the hull, Know I've read of other commercial products out there. Just curious whats an effective dry algae remover used by other members. THANX
I have a 2750 PSI power washer that really doesn't take all the scum off the bottom, does a nice job above the water line. WM acid does a nice job with the power washer, just didn't want to get involved with all the precautions necessary this year. "Brandy" comes out Monday and home Monday night. Lake is up 3 feet from 5 plus inches of rain last week.
We used to use the normal pressure of a garden hose when the hull was still wet from retrieving . . . . . but, this was on VC-17. Anything stronger would begin removing the VC-17 - ACK!
Wayne, Do you have bottom paint on your boat? If so, hard or ablative? Since you sail in fresh water, you may or may not. Ketchup works very well for the brown stains I get on the glecoat above the waterline. I've never tried using it on algae or on bottom paint. Not sure why it works, but it makes the brown stuff white. Maybe because it's a mild acid, but I'm not certain about that either....
Bruce, Part of my issue maybe that "Brandy" still has the original bottom surface as it came from the factory, 15 years ago. Fresh waters in upstate New York and only in the water 5 months every year have not deteriorated the hull bottom. Once cleaned up it looks brand new. It does have algae growth as it always did coming out for the season. I just didn't want to deal with the WM hull cleaner this year. Lots of precautions with that product. 2750 PSI pressure washer doesn't get it all off, works good top side though.
I use CLR full strength, Wash down the hull, Leave it set for 10 min, rinse with hand towel, go over the tough spots again with a kitchen scrubby and rinse well and dry. I am in fresh water and use VC17 on the bottom which only needs to be rinsed when I pull her out for storage.
Bio Kleen makes a variety of "GREEN" cleaners. I have a few on my site and working on getting more listed. Check 'em out at http://www.biokleen.com/ (not my site) however I can provide these for you. Amazing Cleaner will work for most harbor stains and light algae growth, if you want something a little stronger try their Amazing Hull Cleaner.
