Alright, I have made a tough decision to sell my catalina. It is just too big of a boat for me to drag in and out of the water every weekend. I plan to downsize to a catalina 22. I bought the boat and the trailer seperately. I modified the trailer and everything looks good. The trailer will need new tires before it is taken on any long trips. I only bought the trailer to save me wet slip fees. The boat sits at my sailing club 20ft from the water on the trailer. This decision has been an extremely hard one to make. I have a total of $4500 in the boat and trailer. Anyone interested in trading for a 22? The boat must be in great condition and have a trailer. If I sell it, I will most likely ask for more because, to be honest, I got it for a steal.
I saw in your Swap Meet post that you are able to leave the mast up. Any chance of leaving the boat in the water in a slip or on a mooring? I can tell you from experience that it is a game changer. I had a 19' O'Day that was kept on the trailer at a club 20 minutes from my house. I sailed that boat much less than I do my Catalina 25 which is over an hour from my house, but is in a slip. Start the motor, cast the lines and go!
The only problem is that I am about to be extremely poor. My wife just applied to medical school and I think dry docking may be my only choice for the next couple of years. As far as sailing, it would take a natural disaster for me to not be there every weekend...
I feel for you and understand what you are going through. My problem is maintenance. I've owned my boat for 22 years and kept it meticulously until the past two years. Maintenance has gotten to be too much and I thought about downsizing to a 22 while still dreaming and actively looking at 28's and 30's. I've got about $8,000 all told, into Gallivant and, now that I'm retired, decided to keep her a few more years and suck up the maintenance thing. I hate waxing though - used to do it twice a year. Anyway, I now plan on sailing as much of the great lakes as possible in what I have.
Anyway, back to the point. Everyone's circumstances are different. Usually financial ones take precedance over all others though. Keep sailing even if you have to downsize. Perhaps, when your wife is a successful surgeon, you can move up again.
