so my motor ran like a champ last sunday when we took her out on the chesapeake in ~20 kts and 3-4 ft. swells. motor'd out, close reach across to rock hall with probably too much sail up but we were having a blast. man my 150% genoa can produce some serious force. we only had it about 1/2 out and the boat sailed beautifally and much more balanced than with just the main. but i digress.

so i left the motor tilted down but fully raised when we sailed across. the swells were pretty large so im sure it got a little wet hanging on the back of the boat there. when we got closer to the E shore and rock hall i fired up the O/B but noticed quickly it wasnt running right. quite rough and wouldnt rev up well at all. it would idle just fine but when i asked for any power it would sputter and die. i messed with it for a while, same deal. thought it might be water in the gas so i left it idling the whole sail back across the bay, and when close to home tried her out and no improvement. i took the cover off and if i covered the intake 75% with my thumb it ran much better so i figure it is a lean condition, and fairly consistent. it got us into the slip at high idle and forward gear just fine, with the wind at our backs.

i am thinking possible clogged fuel filter? or the carb is clogged? any ideas? i figured id grab a fuel filter and new plug and go out friday and see if i can make anything happen. any other parts i should throw at it? anything else i should check?

thanks gents. hope to go check out the Annapolis show this weekend possibly, and get out sailing in the gorgeous weather!

Does it have a manual choke? Could it be sticking?

I think you're on the right track with the fuel filter though. You might check out the threads that talk about alcohol in the fuel causing break down of fuel lines.

Odd that those symptoms would act up so quickly.

Sounds a little like ethnaol woes . . . water/fuel separation. Are you taking any preventive measures? Filter and/or fuel additive?

OJ, i am not doing anything special with my fuel or adding additives as i share the boat amongst 3 of us and it gets used almost every weekend. i figure with all that use and the amount of fuel we are running through it there isnt much point to using anything. guess i might be wrong. i was planning on using an additive over the winter when we arent out on it so much. and, the boat has actually been sitting for maybe a month prior to the trip out last weekend.

what preventative measures are there with the filter?

I think i like th etrack OJ is on. Personally I can't be bothered with a fuel seperator since I am the only one using my boat, and I control what fuel goes in it. In a shared boat, I would go for the Racor seperator and share the cost between teh owners.

I try to only put high test, ethanol free through the baot ( we use about $40 in fuel per season - not a big splurge to get the good stuff.) So I have a hard time justifying the cost of the seperator. If I was using low-test or couldn't control what was being pumped through th eengine, different story.
