Without starting the debate on "is it a center board or swing keel", suffice to say it is sticking in the down position. I can move it aft by diving down and pushing. It then swings fine, but does not swing to the full down position on its own. Any suggestions on how to get smooth operation at all points? Boat is a 1997 WB.

I think you might have to seperate the cable from the centerboard and see what happens, possibly the pivot pin or shims may need cleaning. That is a pretty heavy board not to go all the way down on its own. I guess I don't know what all the way down means in terms of travel. My board is lowered about half way and stays that way the whole season. For what it's worth I don't know why you would sail with it all the way down. Others should chime in.

The cable is long enough, and nothing is blocking the board or the cable. By all the way down, I mean completely vertical. I assume that less than vertical will result in a change in the way the boat responds in turning as well as reducing the ability to counter heel. Most of my sailing experience is in dingys, and those centerboards were raised an lowered to reduce drag on the down-wind, but did not swing. Any suggestions on what to use to grease the pivot?

Scott;
I find that by raking the board aft that I can get a more balanced helm, my guess is that I have my board raked at about 15degrees. Since the board is only weighted enough to get it to drop, it adds very little to the riting ability of the boat. I kinda remember something about Catalina adding a block to keep the board from droping to vertical. (?)

On different centerboard boat I once had, I had to be careful to keep some tension on the cable that raised the board while lowering it so the cable or the shackle that attached it wouldn't jam next to the board in the trunk with the board fully lowered. That might not be the cause here, but not lowering the board all the way, as Bill suggests, would mean keeping some constant tension.

I also noticed back when the C-250 was a new model, that the centerboard was positioned further forward than the wing keel, making me suspect that in the full-down position the centerboard might cause excessive weather helm. Several other people besides Bill have since reported that the helm balance is better when the board isn't fully lowered.
