When backing out of our slip we brushed against the boat next to us. His aft starboard corner rubrail came into contact with the blue stripes below our rub rail and took the blue off of about 3-4' of the striping. I think I can order some of the striping from Catalina. I figured I would cut the damaged section out and put in the new stripe. A friend suggested I just put the new stripe right over the old. Sounds easier and probably would look fine unless a person got really close. Anyone done this repair? Any tips (other than back out more carefully!!)?
We cannot direct the winds but we can adjust our sails.
Randy, I remember reading a few really good posts here about this.
From what I recall reading, it was a pretty easy job - they suggested that you pull off the old damaged section, slice, use some mineral spirits, wipe off all the residue, and apply the new pinstripe, it goes on pretty easy, just got to have a good eye to make a straight line.
One of the neat ideas I saw here was to find a good automotive store, as they apparently have vinyl trim tape colors to match almost anything. Next time I'm up in the States, I'll try this (unless Catalina comes through).
Randy, When I retired several years ago my wife had "Brandy" re-striped as a retirement gift. automobile detailer drove up while boat was in backyard and re-striped for about $100-$125 dollars. Used heat gun to remove old stripes. Problem with patching is matching a faded color, he matched original striping with Cad/Cam computer, ordered material and was done in 2-3 hours.
I have done this twice in the past 3 years. First time I did not remove the protective coating and it ended up cracking and looking kind of bad. I did not make that mistake this past winter. The striping from West Marine was used both times. Will see how long it lasts this time. Previous striping was original I think (1997). Had to use a heat gun to remove, but mineral spirits did a good job cleaning and the new went on easy. Hardest part is getting the lines straight. Used a chalk line to set a guide. Worked well.
