I purchased my first sailboat a couple weeks ago and trailered her home from Colorado. My goal this past weekend was to get the mast up... having never done it before, it was nerve wracking. I pulled the boat out of the dry storage area and took it 100 yards down the road to a camp spot to work on it. I ended up having to do it twice and I spent 6 hours stepping through it with the manual but was finally successful.
Next came my huge mistake; driving it back to the yard I didn't realize some tree limbs hung over the road. I ran the starboard side of my mast/rigging through the only tree in western Kansas :( Luckily the limbs were only about an inch wide but it sheered them off at about 15 MPH. I stopped and checked the deck for cracks and it and the mast looks unharmed, spreaders and shrouds look fine. Chain plates are still solid. Anyway, I feel like a complete idiot but I hope I got extremely lucky and didn't do any major harm.
If you can think of anything else I should check please let me know. I don't think I'll ever make that mistake again.
To add insult to injury I found my wind chicken down in the cabin and I just got a new a LED anchor light that I need to put in the Hella fixture.
Ahh learning pains - I can't wait till this all becomes second nature. Thanks for listening.

Will, congrats on new boat. But dont be too hard on yourself. But be prepared for many others to come. It happens. My story on my first purchase was also in trailer and it is unnerving. Coming down a major freeway on the July 4th weekend, I noticed a wheel passing me. What the @@@@? It was my trailer tire. Well I neglected to check to lug nuts. Long story short, all end ok. No damage to boat as rental truck was heavy. I was lucky. I have had other miss adventures I wont go into. I will let you find out for yourself. Thats half the fun of owning a boat. Steve A
