Last Saturday we had our annual "Tour de Canyon". 'Twas only 14 miles this year. My crew all having other priorities I got to helm a friend's O'Day 27.2 in the Cruiser Fleet. Forecast was for 10 - 15 mph wind. We went out and sailed into 25 knots with gusts! We experienced numerous VIOLENT round-ups from a beam reach - no warning, just an immediate 90 degree turn to weather! Those gusts had to be 35+. The mainsail trimmer (the boat's owner) was almost incessantly easing the main and re-trimming. We also had to sail a mile along the narrowest part of the lake towards the river mouth with the wind on the nose - what with tacking in a narrow channel and hoping not to round-up into another boat, it was an interesting 40 minutes! We did manage to correct over the other boats and finish 1st. But there were 3 very weary sailors who staggered to the clubhouse...

If I'd known you were looking for crew I would have driven up from Houston. It's been a looonnnggg time since I've been out on Canyon Lake. Then again, if I'd gone out with you you might not have that new trophy. Congrats!
I was going to sail the bay Saturday but we had the same winds as you so I elected to stay home.
Me and my team is going to drive from Texas by Canyon Lake. The biggest challenge for us is it is very long distance and many of my team member are new in this trip. This will be the toughest trip in my life.

Congrats Derek! I like longer races, but those conditions would sure make it seem like a LOT longer than just 14 miles!!!
The Galveston Bay Cruising Asso. (no crusing, just racing) used to put on an 80 mile race on Galveston Bay. It was a LOT of fun! Have not seen anything similar here in central Florida, but the racing on the Banana River and Indian River is fun!
