We installed a Boomkicker and we like it very much. It is a "set it and forget type" of thing and is very effective at keeping the boom away from the crews' heads.
The only thing you have to remember is that there will be some "give" on the boom so if you grab the boom, for instance while moving about the cockpit at the dock, it will give a bit. This has never been an issue for us or our passengers but some people don't like it.
Bruce, I have 2001wb. Added the kicker this past spring and love it. No more dropping the boom in the cockpit after forgetting to cleat topping lift. It also makes prepping much easier not having to disconnect and reattach the lift when trailering. The answer for using the boom as a handhold is to retrain yourself if going forward. ie don't rely on it for solid support. In the spirit of Nov.2, I vote yes!
Is it necessary to disconnect the topping lift when sailing? We set it so that it's loose (but still connected) when under sail, then wrap it around a cleat several times when we want to raise the boom. Because of this we've never had a case of the boom coming down unintentionally. Of course, we may lose 0.05 kt because of the distortion to the air flow.
I've had topping lifts on various boats and was able to set them to hold the boom at a reasonable height with the sail down, while going just slightly slack with it raised. No need to release and re-set. Quick yank and the boom can go way up while at anchor or whatever.
Any thoughts about the original question? Tips about installing a boom kicker? I purchased one from seoladair for my WB 250 and plan to instal it soon. Any thoughts from those who have completed the instal would be welcome. My topping lift is a cable and clip swaged to the backstay, so I don't have the option of leaving it attached while sailing.
It has all of the instructions for the various models.
Mine was model K07C250 and had a anti-rotation device for the boom. The website indicates that the anti-rotation device is optional for smaller boats but needed as boats approach 30'. At the time I bought mine it was a standard part of the C250 Boomkicker kit.
I suggest you study the web site. Lots of good info.
