What do you use for the pin at the base of the mast? I bought my boat 4 years ago and it had nothing that I could find so, I went with a SS 3/8" bolt and nylock nut. Worked great until I took the mast down this year and I must have twisted the mast somehow with sufficient force to bend the bolt while I was attempting to remove it. Or, maybe it happened the time I lost a windward shroud? Who knows.
I assume it should be a stout clevis pin but, what do you use?

SS Bolt, several washers and a nut. I keep an extra set on the boat because t is a tight fit and prone to wrecking the threads when pulling the bolt out.
Going back to John's original question. Anyone thought about using a large clevis pin instead of a bolt? No threads to wreck. Use a hairpin cotter to go with it.
I've looked around for 4"x3/8" Clevis pins and haven't yet found one. Admittedly, I haven't looked real hard. I did find SS bar that could be cut and drilled at both ends for cotters pins. Yeah, right, like I have the tools or talent to drill stainless bar with any amount of accuracy.
