I seem to be having some trouble with my bilge pump. After a week of constant rain, I had water in my bilge (yes I know I have a leak). I tried to use the bilge in the cockpit but did not see a difference in the amount of water. Does the water drain outside the boat somewhere? I have tried the owners manual but haven't really found any answers. Could my bilge pump be broken? Also, if I have water in my v berth water container, how do i drain it? I do not have a drain on the deck of the boat. thanks in advance!
Adam, Sounds like you have used the hand pump in the cockpit with the handle placed in the hole, to rid the water and it should expel. There is a drain on the port side or located above the waterline at stern of boat. See here: http://www.indiscipline.org/cat25/launch/wingkeel.jpg If you have done this w/o success you may have a blockage in the hose or the pump is bad, assuming also the end of the hose is in the water in the bilge. There are rebuilt kits for this. I am sure another member with prior problems may offer their expertise. There are a couple of ways to rid the water in the v berth water container: 1 use one of the sink water hand faucet to rid it or buy a pump to remove it. There is both hand, battery and electric types. Check WM for ideas. What reason do you want to remove it? Steve A
I just bought the boat and am still learning where everything is and whats what. I have no idea how much water is in the v berth water container and how long it has been in there. The guy I bought the boat from loved the idea of sailing but didn't really know how nor did he know how to operate everything on the boat. So its possible it still has water in the container from 1984! This could be interesting.
The manual bilge pump (the one in the cockpit) is used to dewater the boat after being flooded (i.e. holed or pooped). The bilge hose is rather large diameter and must be completely submerged to create enough suction to pull the water throught the pump. If there is not a lot of water (several inches) or if the end of the bilge hose is not completely submerged, you will not have any luck moving the water. The pump itself has a rubber diaphram and flapper valves that create the suction. It is very possible that dry rot has taken its toll on these parts. You can test your bilge pump by filling a 5 gallon bucket with water and then inserting the end of the bilge hose (usually black rubber - sometimes white plastic) and pumping from the cockpit. If can't move any water, you could have a blockage or you need to rebuild the pump. The bilge pump thru-hull is the round white hole under the letter "D", just the left of the gudgeon. I think this is fairly typical for C-25s.
My fresh water tank is under the starboard setee, so I don't know much about the water tanks in the V-berth. I guess I would drain it, sanitize it, flush, repeat. I would drain it by just using the hand sink flipper pump and let it drain down the sink.
I'm curious about the water tank in the V-berth, as most of the Catalinas have the water tank under the starboard settee. Can you get a photo and post it here on the forum (using the [ img] syntax) or post it on a photo website and post a link?
Like Tom said, you can empty it using the sink "faucet", or you can probably siphon it out into a bucket as the V berth is higher than the rest of the cabin.
I too would be interested in seeing a pic of the water tank since my 84 boat does not have one. Could be a prior owner installation. If it has a lot of water in it, I would be thinking about some kind of electric pump. There are inexpensive ones that use garden hose attachments and it will work for your tank as well as the bilge. Check Harbor Freight's website for water pumps.
The only water tank under a V-Berth on a C25 I'm aware of is the waste tank for the head. Is the tank black plastic? If so, you will have to go to a pump out station at a marina and suck the waste out of the tank.
