last year replaced the winch/cable. unfortunately didn't take this opportune time to give a complete look over.
last couple of sails this season when keel was almost all the way down heard/felt a "thud". obviously should have already but made me realize (duh) should inspect all parts of the keel.
apologies for not investigating before posting (which i'll do now) however any insight/guidance on exactly what to look for would be much appreciated.
First, crank the keel full up and have someone else crank it down while you watch the cable come off the winch. It could be something as simple as the cable unwinding unevenly and shifting near the full down position. It may also be a keel pin hole in the keel out of round, and when the keel has been let down enough it shifts a little causing the thud sound.
I have experienced the same thud that you are telling about..I spoke to cat. dir. They thought it was the cable overwrapping on it self then letting go. I have ordered the cable asm. "About Time" is now out of the water , on jack stands.. I 'm suspicious of the keel pivot hole being worn egg shaped or something.. I think I'm going to drop the centerboard and check the hole and pin..
