Hey folks, Rita & I are headed to Singapore, Malaysia & Bali in a few days. We've got one contact in Malaysia who's going to take us out for a day sail, but I'm wondering if we have any folks in Singapore or Indonesia that we could talk into a day sail or two.
We'll be there from the 9th through the 29th of December.

Sorry I can not help, but . . . if you are a member of a "recognized" yacht club see if your Commodore can write a letter of introduction for you and offer a reciprocal visiting invitation to anyone in the foreign yacht club you would visit. It worked for me at the Manila Yacht Club a few years ago.
Thanks for the suggestion. Rita has friends at the Royal Selangor Yacht Club in Port Klang/Kuala Lumpur in Malaysia (that's who's taking us out). She used to race out of Port Klang in several regattas before I met her with a bunch of her friend. Unfortunately about three dozen of them were killed in the Boxing Day Tsunami because they were in Phuket for the King's Cup Regatta.
I tried using our association in Singapore last time we were there, but they still wanted a local member to sponsor you to charter a boat. There were catamarans for rent right on the beach, but they were closed for Chinese New Year. Maybe they'll be open before xmas. It'd be a kick in the pants to go zooming around the South China Sea on a 20' cat.
I was doing business with Sing Tel a while back, and had an afternoon off, so I visited the beach (which is nearby the airport). They had a variety of dinghy sailboats there, so I picked a Laser 2 (sloop rigged) and set out from the beach.
Water was pretty murky even well away from shore. I sailed for a few hours up and down the beach. Lots of wind that day and I had a great time.
When I got back to the beach, I talked with the rental guy who asked, "How did you make out out there?" I said, "The sailing was great, and the wind was nice."
He asked, "So how many sharks did you see?".......
"Sharks, there are sharks?!?! Gulp"
He said, "Oh yes, there are many sharks right off the beach over here"
Since there are lots of baitfish the sharks come right up to the beach, sometimes you can even see them out there."
Managed to get some time on a 16' Hobie Cat today in Sanur, Bali. I took two of my nephews and one niece out with me, and we all had a ball, even in the sheeting down rain. We had spent the earlier part of the day snorkeling, so today goes down as a "good" day in my book. Rita and two of her sisters stayed on the beach and had massages & mani-pedies while I played with the kids.
Bali is great, but the heat & humidity are stunning. And this is "winter", can't imagine what it's like in the summer!
We got back into Singapore last night after five days or so in Bali. Here's a link to a Facebook post showing us launching from the beach in Sanur. I've got three of my nieces & nephews with me. I apologize for no easy pictures, but I'm using my brother in law's ancient iBook G4 with a browser I've never heard of (Camino) and it's difficult at best to upload photos, even Facebook is hard. Add me as a friend in FB if you're interested in the photos, I'll be adding more as I go, it's just slow going on this computer. I'll be in Kuala Lumpur on Saturday night where I'll have access to faster computers and easier uploads.
Right now, the wind is howling through Singapore, and it's completely overcast, as it's been every day we've been here, except yesterday. You can't truly appreciate the heat in Bali until you have the sun beating down on you while walking through shops. No wind because of all the buildings, and because of the proximity to the equator, the sun is mercilessly overhead. I managed to get the top of my head burnt yesterday walking around some shops outside our hotel with one of my sisters in law. We were out for about 45 minutes, and I tried to stay in the shade, but unless you're in a store or stall, there is no shade. Stupidly I didn't wear my hat, or sunscreen, and my bandana was sitting in the pouch of my backpack, sitting in our room waiting to be brought down. Oh, well, it could be worse, I saw a number of people on our flight last night that looked pretty crispy, and the pain on the top of my head is bearable. Aloe is the term of the day. I keep forgetting I'm in equatorial sun, and a half hour's exposure to my Pacific Northwest corpse white skin is not a good plan.
More notes coming, I've got a bunch of stories to tell in a personal wiki I'm using on my iPhone, just not sure how best to get them out.
