For a ride on one of the last coal-fired steamers, come to Mystic and board Sabino. Just don't get stuck downwind behind her on the Mystic River like I do now and then...

The dumpster could be converted to a coal bin.

I spent 8 years in the engine room of two different ships. Both steam powered. One was 1200 psi and the other 400 psi. One of the ships was the oldest in continuous commission in the USN. The keel was laid in 1938. They were both steam turbine drive. the old one had Allis Chalmers turbines. She was a jewel.
Today I am a technical advisor for a steam turbine company. I work on steam turbines all day long. Lota fun.
But I really love the old reciprocating steam engines, as you pictured. They are absolute works of art.
I went for a ride on a steam paddle wheeler in Louisville. What a wonderful ride. I marveled at the engines for a little while. Just beautiful.

As a Kid I had a working model steam engine that had a boiler, a steam whistle and a single cylinder with a working governor. At that time, I could only imagine a full sized engine, and the power and HP it could produce. Awesome technology.

Funny this topic should come up. I purchased one of these for the grandsons for xmas (an adult supervised toy) - if only to lure them away from wii for a little while . . .

I hope they'll realize the world didn't always run on computers

Whoa - blast from the past - I have the D16. I've only seen another one in a shop on London's High Street near the west end about 15 years ago.

I'm still waiting for a grandson or granddaughter to give it to.

I wonder if there is a working full-scale replica of the African Queen in service anywhere in the country. Be fun to take a ride on her.
