* Johnson advises replacing the line at three year intervals. * Professional splicing recommended. And therein lies the problem. I do not trust line splices with people's safety nor do I want to replace something in under 5 years that has here to fore lasted 20-30 years. I am more likely to use line for SOME of my standing rigging than lifelines.
I would agree with Frank. The original life lines lasted upward of 33 years so replacements should as well. The difference in price is well worth the peace of mind with safety -- as well as any resale implications down the road.
I considered synthetics too, but a little research revealed the above noted problems. I have been splicing line for 50 years and consider myself pretty good, but I still won't go up the mast on my halyard eye splice - I tie off when I've done it. Lifelines are the same thing in my mind.
