Dave, I live in OC which is in between Long Beach and San Diego. It has been raining 5 straight days with very little let up. I heard we got over 8.5-10 inches. But it is supposed to dry out latter tonite or tomorrow. Emotionally, its reeking havoc on everyone, especially those in burn areas where they have been told to evacuate due to mudslides. Many refuse to leave and are required to sign a waiver if they stay. Personally I feel we are fortunate compared to those in the more severe weather areas of the U.S. or other poorer countries. This is a time to count our blessings and fortunate to have family. Thanks for your thoughts and Merry Christmas. Steve A
Here in San Diego we've had 4.5-10+ inches in the county(18" on MT. Palomar. This might not sound like a lot, but it's half our total rain fall for a year. The San Diego River, which is normally a series of ponds, crested at 14 feet above it's banks. This caused a lot of flooding in Mission Valley. One hotel was totally surrounded by water. The first floor flooded and San Diego Lifeguards had to rescue the guests in boats. Lots of cars were submerged in the area. As usual, some people thought the road closure barriers didn't apply to them and had to be rescued by the River Rescue Team. I live in Clairemont Mesa so all of the water flowed away from us. Some of our streets had big puddles in them and several trees fell down. My big concern, of course, is my boat. I'm afraid I'm going to find lots of water in the bilge because of leaky ports and deck hardware. I'm hoping my new cushions didn't get soaked. I'm going to try to get down there today, but Christmas preparations are the priority for the Admiral. Too much rain is a bad thing, but at least it's not snow.
Mike Glad you were personally spared the mayhem, but a friend who just came in from UC San Diego said it was the worst weather he's ever seen. Flooding and mud was everywhere.
I really hope your boat is okay, since this kind of rain was previously unheard of in So Cal. Now that storm is heading east, clipping the SE states today and tonight, and the northeast tomorrow. I just posted a related thread on Thundersnow with whiteout blizzard conditions expected in coastal New England tomorrow and Monday.
I wouldn't blame it on the misnomer "global warming", but this kind of weather is definitely correlated with climate change.
Bruce, Thanks for the kind thoughts. I checked out the boat yesterday. She was OK with a little water in the bilge which means I have at least one leaky port.
I hope you get through your blizzard with the same fortune I had. We have more rain coming this week, but not as much.
