So with another Christmas in the books, we have been doing a little post-Christmas shopping. Nothign too exciting - a new garage door and glasses for everyone in the family. Actually, nothing on sale, just spending too much money. So after spending $3 or 4,000 on needed things we stopped by radio shack, and what to my wondering eyes did appear, but a countdown-countup timer to replace the one we trashed last summer while racing through a storm. $25 reduced to $12, and then half off in a boxing day clearance - $6 for a new timer. I'm all kinds of happy.
I was in Colorado over Christmas to see my brand new (first) grandchild--my return was delayed by the weather... I knew WM had the Garmin 640 on sale for the lowest price I've seen anywhere, but didn't know for how long... Stopped into the WM store in Norwalk, hoping the sale was lasting till I got back to Mystic after New Years--no such luck--it ended "yesterday". But the manager realized he'd left the sign up by the unit, so offered it to me--I thought about it for 8-10 seconds...
My 11-year-old 276C, which I use on the boat and in the car, was behaving strangely, and both the car and boat power-data cables were falling apart at the plugs. This one does both duties, but with a bigger screen and without swapping data cards. And it updates my 5-year-old map & chart data.
I'm spending a little post-Christmas money on a fleece jacket/liner and a Helly Hansen waterproof parka from Cabella's. I've been playing with the new Haier 10" TV, only gets a few channels here but the picture is good. Finally got the remote to work - the power switch is manual, not electronic, and it has to be in the on position - not sure why it took 2 days for me to figure that one out!

Congrats on the grandchild! And Happy New Year!
I picked up the 640 two days ago at my local WM. I wasn't really sure I wanted it, but I had a 10% off coupon that expired that day, which they were willing to deduct from their sale price. I decided to buy it and keep it in the unopened box for 30 days while I second guess whether to keep it. Since the sale ended, I'm even more glad I have it as an option.
I have really mixed feelings because I've been perfectly happy with the little Oregon 400c, so I don't absolutely need the 640. But it has lots of nice features, and could eventually integrate the displays for depth (which is frequently obscured by passengers) and AIS (don't have an AIS receiver yet), as well as send/receive DSC info (don't have DSC in my current radio). Unfortunately my ancient ST30 sonar is SeaTalk only (no NMEA), so I'd need a new sonar in addition to the new VHF/DSC/AIS electronics. (Gee, it would be really nice if they made a 640S with sonar included!) And the AIS could be really helpful, given the large amount of commercial traffic on the Delaware River. Just ask the Duck boat driver about that one!
This is way more than I have time or money for this year, so I could wait another year and see how iPad apps mature in the meantime. And in the interim I could play with my Netbook and OpenCPN, and if I get the AIS/DSC (probably the most important addition right now) I could wire it up to my Netbook for display.
On the other hand, I could ditch it all and just sail! I'm not sure how much electronics I really need to daysail in familiar waters.
