Not really sure how I'd do it, but has anybody rigged a hammock in or on their boats for relaxing or sleeping?

I imagine with the swinging at anchor, it would produce a sensation that could not be more relaxing and soothing.

I'm just not sure what two points on our boats would be able to withstand the immense inward forces that a hammock will produce.

Anybody try this?

yup. Wasn't as great as you would think though. Anyway, One end of the hammock goes on the forestay. A simple bowline through the hammock and around the forestay does teh trick up front. The other end goes on either the shrouds or the track on the mast for the whisker pole. Either will work, but the shroud is more adjustable.

Lay in it for 15 minutes, get comfy, adn then the admiral will show you why its not as great as you think. Remember if she ain't happy, neither are you. Don't forget to bring her a drink after she steals the hammock.

You can rig a hammock to each shroud if you have enough halyards, and you are sure you won't jam a sheave up top. We have all-rope halyards, so it isn't an issue for us. its a little unnerving for the admiral being that close to teh side though, and you have to watch for where the stanctions are (IIRC, they get in the way if you have to make a quick exit). I know we rigged ours this way once, but I forget why they didn't work as nicely.

Someone on here mentioned a method for hanging one from the boom, over the cockpit, but I forget teh particulars of that beyond opening the hatch all the way, and attaching to the mast up front and the back of the boom at the other end. Never tried that myself. Cockpit is usually full of kids.

Which raises another point. If you find a way to rig 2 hammocks, you will have to train the kids to bartend.

Just speculating...... When I had your Passage, the only usable halyard was the main, which comes off sorta the "wrong side" of the mast... The jib halyard is permanently used by the furler. I guess you could use the bitter end of the main halyard tied to the forestay, and cleat the "shackle end" to the mast to adjust the height. (In other words, you use the main halyard "backwards.") Then tie the other end of the hammock to the mast, perhaps just above the gooseneck. Without another usable halyard, I'm not sure how you make the hammock to a shroud.

Jim, looks like the marina at Sidney, on Vancouver Island. One of our favorites!

Believe or not, I've had great success using an icicle hitch on a shroud to hold my pennant block up. No idea whether it would be strong enough to keep the hammock up. If that works, I may not need to use the main halyard at all.

Another approach would be to take a piece of 3/4" vinyl water pipe from the home improvement store, slot it length-wise and slip it over the shroud. That should hold the hammock in place as well as a line, however, it would be a good idea to check for chafe after a short time.

I have used the spinnaker pole with the jib halyard but for the "hammock in a bag" I would use a PFD for a nap. Randy, yes. A Sky Chair is easier to use but needs more storage.
