Although this mod may not be for everyone Johanna spent the last while designing, making and sewing new V berth bedding in anticipation for our upcoming 2-3 month trip south. The result is ingenious, functional and good looking. Here are some images of the result...
The v berth with the settee back removed offers a lot of room, in fact a full 6ft width and over 6ft in length. The 3 inch foam is lined with a double cover complete with zipper. As indicated in the picture the total 3" thick mattress is divided into 4 sections consisting of 1) main mattress, 2) head extension fitted between the main mattress and table, 3)left side sewn-on tapered flap extension between hull and center head section, 4) right side sewn-on tapered side flap extension between hull and center section.
Image shows sewn-on tapered side section flipped over in order to store the entire head section with both side flaps out-of-the-way behind the settee back rest during day use of the cabin
Both sewn-on side sections folded over in order to store the extension behind the settee backing during day use...
You'll notice the foot end part of the mattress about 8" or so shorter than the original cushions... this is to accommodate the bunching of blankets.

We have a single piece of memory foam overlaying the V-Berth cushions, and standard elasticated Qsized sheets are a pain! I think our 'mattress' is longer as we have a slot cut in the after middle end of it to pass around the Mast support.
Paul, can you tell me more about your memory foam? I ask as this last weekend I spend at Catalina sleeping miserably in the V-berth. For some reason, I could no longer get comfortable. I had a sleeping bag on the cushions but alas they are no longer suitable for me. What thickness did u get? Was pad a full size? cutting it down to a Vee fit. Why did you place pad over pad vs under. My understanding is that if over, ones tends to sweat more. Lastly, are you sleeping better? Would you make any changes? Thanks for help to a tired old salty dog! Did I mention sleepless too? Steve A
I've seen it suggested that 3" memory foam works well. I purchased a Queen size memory foam mattress pad on Overstock and have one of the "old" electric knives to use to cut it (which was recommended). I was going to cut a single piece and cover it, but on re-thinking I think I will cut two using the current pads for a pattern...not sure how soon I will get to it, but will take some photos and report back before too long...
Dan, nice tip, thanks. I went to overstock and found 4" memory, any size for $78. Great deal and free shipping. Gonna go measure this weekend and decide. Will need electric knife. Might even get 2nd one for aft berth! Steve A
