Mates:

I am looking for suggestions for alternatives to VC 17 Extra. I purchased the boat last year. The year before she had VC 17 applied. I didn't grass up but did slime up. Boat is kept for season in Colorado reservoir that gets pretty warm. Water is considerably less than pristine.

Other than cleaning the bottom do I need to do anything to prep for painting over VC 17? Wet sand with?

Thanks,

DJ

DJ,

If you're not using VC then you'll need to completely remove it before using something else.

I thought ablative paint could be applied over VC but you could not apply VC over ablative paint.

Thanks Don. It looks like I'm going to be going with VC 17. Stripping the bottom sounds like too many weekends or too much $ for a pro. Since there are no 'yards' in the CO front range I'll make do.

VC17 has an additive called Biolux, which is effective in resisting slime. It won't prevent it completely, especially in an area where the lake receives a lot of farm runoff with fertilizer, but it will reduce it considerably. If you sail the boat regularly, you won't have much slime. If you race, you'll still want to scrub the bottom before every race, but, if you only cruise or daysail casually, you can get by without scrubbing it at all, although it will of course perform better if you scrub it once or twice during the summer. Most antifouling paints have eithger Biolux or Irgarol to resist slime. I doubt that you'll gain anything significant, in terms of resistance to slime, by changing to a different paint.
