Went to the New England Boat Show yesterday in the Boston Convention Center. It was a great event. Good showings from Catalina, IPY, Jeauneu (sp?) Beneteau, Sabre, Tartan, C&C, Hunter, Hanse. J, Cape Cod Cat, Aleron, Corsair were also there. The 35' Hanse seemed to be a steal as they were knocking off 30,000 from price. The Island Packet's Estro and the 38' Sabre were probably the best as far as fit, finish etc... The sabre's woodwork was unsurpassed. I'm going to have to buy that Estro as soon as I win the lottery. I loved the big huge main cabin- and though the lay out of the twin cabins aft took some getting used to, when I thought about it I realized how much good sense they made. Hunter surprised me with their e36. Seemed very well laid out and capable. The 40' Bene. seemed astonishingly chintzy. Not sure if the Catalina 355 replacing the 350 is any better (it probably is in the water where it truly counts). The Tartan 40 had gorgeous woodwork but had smaller accommodations than a Cat 32. Had a great talk with salesperson from J out of Newport and France. Would really like to sail on there 35 footer to see how well they really handle. They just may be the most capable sailors on the market today.

Vendors were good. My kids had a wonderful time at the rc sailing pond and are begging me for rc sailboats. I got some NU teak samples and am looking at replacing my delaminating teak and holly plywood. The interior stuff seems tough and easy enough to work with. Since I must also replace snapped steering cable I should be in for a busy spring.

Sounds like a great day of dreaming and looking. There are a lot of Hanse's near me and they seem to be well liked by those who own them. I thought they were pricey, but then again. The sailing reviews I have read of the C355 said that they needed to reef early and alot, which implies a light wind design. I believe the 350 may be a better all weather sailor. While not a racer, my son has been out in more gale conditions than I would like each time on a J boat of differing numerical variation. I do believe they are safe, well built boats if very racing focused. I love seeing the creative (or not) use of space and ergonomics that each generation of new boats offers -- and how fiberglass really has changed the game of sailing.
