I am tentativley planning a summer cruise from Houghton MI to Duluth, MN, and possibly farther, this summer, probably in early June. The itinerary will include stops in Ontonogan, MI, Ashland, WI, the Apostle Islands, WI, and Duluth. I may also decide to head north to Grand Marais, MN, east to Isle Royal, than home to Houghton. The trip to Duluth, minus Isle Royal, should take about two weeks.

Anyone interested in going along as passenger or to bring their boat up, let me know. I have not set sailing dates yet pending any responses.

Wow Al, that's quite the itinerary! Something like 450 miles? The Apostle Islands look really cool. I hope you get to do this and take MUCH video and pictures for us to drool over!

You bet. I've never posted photos/videos before - techno deficient, but I'll give it a shot.

If this works out I may break down and get a passport to sail the Canadian side next year. Really primative up there, but my friends tell me it's utterly fantastic.

If you are interested in sailing just one or two legs of this cruise you would be more than welcome. Right now I have two sisters-in-law and one female acquaintance interested in a segment each. Beyond that it's single handed.

I had never heard of the place before, but there is a lot to explore in the Apostle Islands National Lakeshore! Here's a sailing pamphlet.

There are campsites and docks on many of the islands, too! The Park Service has produced this
boating guide.

It looks like a great place for sailing and anchoring out or tying up to a dock. Here's the navigation chart.

If you take a kayak or dinghy, you could explore sea caves on several of the islands.

Al, I don't quite see how the City of Duluth would fit into such a sailing trip, but maybe it makes sense to you! Of course, Bob Dylan was born in Duluth, MN in 1941. His family moved to Hibbing, MN, and on January 31, 1959, during his senior year in high school, Dylan made a trip to Duluth to see Buddy Holly, the Big Bopper, Ritchie Valens and Dion & the Belmonts. Super duper!

Dylan's concert at the Pacific Amphitheater in Costa Mesa, CA in July, 2011 has tickets on sale now for $581 for a good seat. No more North Country Blues for that guy! Hey, why don't you invite Bob Dylan to sail home to Duluth with you? I bet the old coot would love it! Just imagine!

With or without him, it will be a legendary maritime adventure.

Happy sailing!

I plan on docking in Bayfield where I'll meet my "gal in every port" - my wife, who doesn't like sailing but does like following me around to my various destinations, sleeping on the boat, and of course, shopping. That's why I have Duluth on the itinerary. If the weather is agreeable to her we may sail the islands for a day or two and save a longer stay for another time.

John - thanks for the pamphlets. You've officially started my planning process.

We sail out of Ashland, WI so the Apostle Islands are our regular cruising grounds. They are fantastic! The downside is that the water is very cold... There are some bays, though, where swimming is possible.

I took these last year on a week-long cruise around the islands.

Devil's Island sea caves:

Beach at Stockton Island's Julian Bay

Raspberry Island, where we anchored for 2 nights because it was so nice!

There is even a trippy version of a "Parrot-head" bar on Madeline Island called Tom's Burned Down Cafe. They make a mean rum punch...

Al and I have been in contact. We may meet at Black River, east of the Apostles and then head back via the outer islands.
