Let's say the current backstay is not original and I don't know if it is the correct length.
A rigger told me that Catalina has a bad habit of providing incorrect stay dimensions. CD sells a <1989 and a =>1989 backstay but won't make a new one without having the original. The Cataina parts catalog only lists one length.
So, if I wanted to raise the mast to measure for the correct backstay length - would be boat need to be on the water and the mast plum?
How is your helm--light to moderate weather helm in most conditions? The forestay and backstay lengths primarily control helm balance, and a little weather helm is generally what you want. I think usually that involves the mast being raked back 6-8", although others may suggest different amounts. If you have the helm you want, and neither turnbuckle is at an extreme, then your current stays are OK, and you could send your backstay to CD (or any rigger) to check against their standard and, if necessary, replicate. If you have an adjustable backstay, the length is less critical, and the forestay length becomes the issue.
Won't make a new one without the original... Does this pertain only to you or is this CD's policy to everyone that wants to order new rigging. I only ask because I was about to order new rigging but this might make me go to a local rigger rather than get involved with cross country shipping. It takes them over a week to get anything to NY.
I just got off the phone with CD and ordered all new standing rigging, New sheaves, The mast head crane and seizing wire. I dropped the mast last Sunday and removed all the stays so when I got to the Back stay part Cd said to just measure the back stay from pin eye to pin eye with the turnbuckle set to where it was on the boat. That was easy ( You can see the shiny part on the threads) Eye to eye came to 32'8". My Catalina manual says 32'4" so Catalina has some discrepancy's with their measurements. I called CD back and gave him the measurement and It will all be shipped in 5 days. I didn't have to ship them anything.

My backstay is within 1/8" of the Catalina drawing.
