Nothing of note happened in Oceanside (25 miles north of San Diego). The Chilean earthquake last year produced a pretty strong tidal surge that did uproot some channel markers but not much else. The water level inside the harbor rose a couple of feet in about 15 minutes and then subsided. Have to talk to some of the liveaboards to get an overall picture but nothing like that this year so far. All the docks in Oceanside Harbor are floating docks kept stationary by pilings so the water level is not as much an issue as the surge.
My son is scheduled to fly to Japan in 11 days, to begin his first job after graduating from Ohio State. I'm hoping this won't interfere with it, because he needs this job for his career development. He studied Japanese language, and wants to be an interpreter. He's excited about the prospect of living in Japan.
Moderate surge in San Diego Bay. I was teaching a class on a J80 without an engine. We tie up to a dock that is oriented perpendicular to the prevailing wind at the downwind a long "fairway" between two docks. Usually you just cruise in under bare poles sailing off the hull then use the rudder to brake before hitting the dock. Today, with the surge, you had to wait for the water to stop churning and swirling through the boats, docks, etc, then try to get in before it started churning in the opposite direction. Over and over. Pretty much all day. At least 4-6 knot current at max in and out. You had to take a course that would normally result in head on impact into the dock but then the current would reverse and you could sort of side slip in. Actually kinda fun, but sobering that people lost lives and property...
I haven't gotten down to check out the boat in Mission Bay. The bait barge anchored about 100 yards off our dock was broken up by the surge. Parts of it floated into some of boats near L dock.
I'm gonna check tomorrow. The owner of Sea Fever went by yesterday late morning and reported all well. I was on the 80s again out of Shelter Cove this morning and there was still moderate tidal surge but seemed to be much less this afternoon. Don't know if because it is weakening or due to the higher astronomical tide.
