I lucked into a Seaward propane tank on CL a few weeks back. The owner had changed it out for a newer model on his 27' sailboat, and only wanted $10 for it, including the enclosure. I haven't been able to find the same model anywhere for less than $100, and that doesn't include the $50-$60 enclosure! The tank was grimy-filthy-nasty when I got it which showed up in the photos he provided me. I got it home and realized that most of the grime on it was simply baked on grease from (I'm guessing), his BBQ. It was everywhere, including the inverted dome of the bottom (how do you drip grease up into a dome?). Anyway, a soak in a bucket full of hot water & laundry detergent, and some elbow grease with a green scrubby later, I have a fairly nice looking 1 gallon propane tank. There's some rust around the rim of the bottom of the tank, but I'm going to clean it up with either my soda blaster, or sand blaster at work and repaint it. There are a couple of other places where it has rusted as well, but nothing serious. I hope to find some U-channel rubber that'll fit around the base of the tank to keep it from being banged up again, then I need to figure out where I can mount it on SL. I'm thinking under the starboard catbird seat, but I'm open to suggestions.

I hate to throw water on your propane fire , but be sure it has the overfill prevention valve. If not, you will not be able to refill it at any reputable LP dealer. Replacing the valve requires re-certification, which costs much more than a new household grade tank (but perhaps still less than a new marine grade tank).
You can buy an adapter that will allow you to hook up new grills to the old tanks, but reputable LP dealers will still refuse to fill the tanks.
Good point, that was the first photograph I asked for from the PO. It has the OPD, as well as the requisite stickers and triangular handle. When you turn it upside down, you can hear the mechanism flopping around. That's one of the reasons I was surprised at the price. As far as I can see, there's nothing wrong with the tank, other than needing it's butt scrubbed, and a bit of rust in non-critical areas. Some judicious soda blasting, some touch up paint, and a rubber foot (or bed liner spray) on the rim, and it should be good to go.
If you find another, let me know. My boat has the original tank (and maybe the original propans) which I'll never be able to refill. As soon as I run out of it, I'll need to buy a new one. I'm waiting because I use it very little.

As I recall, the cost was about $30. 2 years ago. My tank was one of the expensive aluminum ones, and well worth the cost. I don't remember the name of the business, but I'll be back in the area in a couple of weeks, and will be able to provide you that information if you are interested. Not many places are authorized to replace the valves, and they're hard to find. Let me know if you'd like me to get that info for you.
