We were in the habit of leaving the tongue jack wheel down when launching with our tongue extension out to keep the extension from flexing too much. Last year we bent our wheel that way and I'm looking for a replacement. I wanted to check in here and find out what other people do.
I saw in one thread a concern about upward pressure on the extension popping it off the ball. I always have a safety chain on in case the ball comes off, but I hope to never use it!
Anyways, how do you launch if you have a tongue extension? Pull up the jack and just have the support be the wheels and the ball on the truck?
I do what you do as well, use the tongue jack wheel down. I installed a two wheel fulton (I think) jack. So far I have yet to bend anything. It's similar to this, but all metal.
P.S. I HAVE done it without lowering the trailer jack, but I didn't feel very comfortable doing that, so have since been lowering the trailer jack.
I put a second wheel jack on the side of the trailer as close to the front as I could and still be able to swing the jack up and down. Seems to work. However, I have a fin keel trailer and a swing keel boat, and for the time being the rig is very tongue light because it is set up for a fin keel boat. I need to get the axle carriage moved back a few inches. Also, I use the strap method to launch/retrieve.
I've been laucnching with my tongue extension for 22 years. Except for the extension flexing, I've only had one issue. I accidentally left the jack wheel down. It caught on the ramp lip, tore the wheel off, and bent the extension. It took me awhile to get the tongue extension straightened out and I now have a removable wheel. No other issues since that first launch.
