Back down to Tom Curran's for a twofer this week-end! 2 races Saturday and 2 races Sunday. Unfortunately we broke a keel winch 1/2 mile off the start Saturday and retired to inspect and trailer the boat. But Sunday we got out Tom's OTHER (SOME people, huh?!) boat, a Watkins 25, and gave it all we had! Didn't finish all that well but the day had some triumphs! By the end of the day we were a well oiled machine! Genoas and Drifters flying everywhere! Raised'em both on one downwind leg. A lot of fun, the Watkins is a really nice boat, solid and steady. We were 3 wide at the finish, placing 1 second behind the leading boat and 5 seconds ahead the the trailing one! Here's a few pics and here's the rest.

Those hard working folks on the committee boat

Finally some wind!

Tom and Bill on the foredeck flying both Genoa and drifter!

Bill is in charge of the racing association and crewing with us and Jean is Tom's wife.

Wow--racing with crew on the leeward rail and a bimini up... That's what I call casual racing!

The Watkins 25 is indeed roomy, solid, and conservative... It later became the Com-Pac 25 that we might have bought if if hadn't cost in the $40s back in the 1990s... and everyone who had them was keeping them.

Bet the stereo was on too. Love the pics. Looks like everybody was having fun.

We cancelled our Sunday races. Steady winds at 35 gusting over 40. Was not a day to be on the lake.

Interesting to see you fly 2 headsails. Our PHRF protocol only allows one headsail at a time (unless you are in the act of changing one). That's why I love our long whisker pole!

Derek, twin headsails are allowed by PHRF on the Chesapeake Bay, if they are specified in the sailing instructions. The SIs specify them in some of the middle distance races (about 30 miles) and longer races, such as the 70 NM Governor's Cup race.

Yup...the radio was on, and since the W25 is the wife's boat, she can sit where ever she wants

Not an optical illusion.....! It was when I was lapping you!!! (also notice I was doing it without a jib hoisted!!! <grin>)

Seriously though, you guys were looking GOOD out there!!!! The start of the second race was fun! The O-Day32 and I made a "Watkins sandwich"!!! (it was also the worst start of the whole weekend for me since I somehow got buried user the big Irwin and the O-Day!

Fun weekend!
