Our lake is flooded and I can't get to my Catalina 250, so I'm living sailing vicariously through planning my upgrades. I bought the AR-3 Anchor roller and I see it calls for 3/8" bolts, but I don't know the length. Anybody installed one of these and know the minimum bolt length? Thanks, MJ

Michael,
I think we used 1-1/2" SS bolts with Nylock nuts and fender washers. I had to grind the washers so they'd fit next to each other. The hardest part was getting the nuts on the bolts, and then a wrench on the nuts. Rita's hand was the only one that'd fit through the access port.

I just bought an AR3, hope I don't have to enlarge that access hole.

I'm a pretty big guy, so your hands may fit if you're not. Rita's pretty small, so her hands fit inside fairly easily.

Another thing to watch out for: I managed to capture my forestay snap shackle with the install. The bolt can't be backed out far enough to remove it from the deck fitting. This is no big deal as long as I have no problems with that particular shackle, but when or if I do, the only way it's coming off is with a grinder to cut the pin, or removal (and reinstall) of the AR-3 (which ain't happening, I'd much rather grind the bolt off and replace the shackle). This was just stupidity on my part, I never noticed it until about a day after the fact when I had a Homer d'oh! moment.

Be careful. The fiberglass is not finished inside that area, Easy to cut your hands in there. Wear gloves.

I wonder if a plumber's Telescoping Basin Wrench might work in there?

Or, Something like this

The good thing is, when you drop your tools up there (and you probably will), they're somewhat easily retrieved by looking for them in the forepeak storage area. I dropped one wrench, and then while trying to fish it out, I dropped my grabber tool down there with it (oh the irony). I thought they were both basically sacrificed to Neptune, but when I went to do some work under the V-berth, there they were right against the bow of the boat.
