I have a 1982 Catalina 25 that came to me with a roller furling system on the main and jib. The jib system is fine, but the main rolls on a wire attacted only at the top and bottom of the mast. Easy to use, but doesn't help getting into wind. I'm ready to replace the original main and thought it a good time to update. An easy to use main sail system is essential as I have a disability and need to be able to operate as much as possible from the cockpit. Would appreciate any advice or thoughts regarding diffenent systems (roller furler, lazy jack, dutchman, etc)---Thanks
It could simply be lack of sufficient tension on the luff. Problems pointing could also simply be an older, tired sail. If it's too stretched for the furler, performance will suffer.
I'm a big fan of off-the-shelf sail lofts. But, in this case, you might want to talk to a local sail loft that can look at what you have and advise. Maybe, your new sail can be cut with the proper luff tape for the furler but, if it's still a problem, the local guy may be able to install traditional hanks and you can slide it up the mast slot. Obviously, the issue is cost.
If you're looking to find an in-mast system, buy a different boat -- I bet it'll be cheaper.
I don't mean to get into your personal business but, depending on what your particular challenges are, a traditional mainsail can be easily rigged to be hoisted from the cockpit. Mine is and so are my jiffy reefing lines. I also have lazy jacks. If I were going to by a new flaking system though, I'd go with a dutchman but I won't do it to simply replace what I have.
By the way, your mainsail furler is rarer than hen's teeth. I'd bet you're the only C25/C250/Capri owner on the forum that has one.
Can the wire be replaced with a foil? I would think that a furling system would be the easiest way to raise/drop sails, until it malfunctions. CDI has a main furling system. I think that for the mainsail I would prefer a dutchman system if I had a disability that limited my ability to move around on the boat. There's also a lazy jack system that incorporates a sail cover called a Doyle Stackpack. Supposed to be good and easy to use, but probably pricey.
The CDI should have a foil over the wire, not a bare wire. Check CDI's website. Placing the sail with a space behind the mast will definitely compromise performance, but tuning should give you reasonable performance with decent sails.
