Hello, have 1982 c-25 fin keel, keel bolts are rusting away to the point where they need replaced.looking at catalina direct kits but I think best left to someone who has done it,any recommendations or know somebodys in the cleveland ohio area ?
Probably the most professional method I've read about on this topic was done on a C25 in San Diego. A company brought in a semi-modified drill press which sat on the floor of the main salon. Think it took ~5 days, $900.
There are many, many threads on this topic on this website. If you'd like to learn more - use the search function and type in "sister bolts"
I'd suggest contacting one of the larger marinas or boat yards in the Cleveland area.
Where in Cleveland? I'm in Bay Village but my boat's in Sandusky. I think my marina could probably do the work if you have the means to get it there.
I've not done it but, from what I've read on this forum, the approach has been to marry new bolts between the old. It requires the right tools and a lot of patience but could probably be a DIY project if you have those two things. I have neither. Is that a lead keel or cast iron? I'm assuming iron. Somebody here will know.
Duane Wolff (Champipple) will probably know of a yard in Cleveland that can do the work. He's a former C-25 owner at Edgewater YC.
I can tell you who NOT to use. I had a guy affilicated with the Catalina dealer in Vermillion do the wing keel conversion on my boat a handful of years ago. It took him four months longer than he initially quoted, and the boat started to sink immediately upon the first launch after the installtion. The keel was obviously incorrectly installed, and I had to pay another person to remove and reinstall the keel.
It's certainly not the same kind of job, but the wing keel conversion is not a real complicated process. I wouldn't trust this guy to wax the hull.
If you want to know the name, just send me an email through the forum.
