When unfurling my jib I have to go forward and unfurl the last 2 or 3 turns by hand, seems the nylon bushing or bearing just isn't slick enough. I've flushed it with fresh water but that doesn't help.
I just did this fix. 1st if your furling line is old and fuzzy the friction of the line may affect performance. There is a pin on the drum pull it and you can slide the extrusion with the sail on it up very easily. The drum will lift up exposing the nylon/plastic ring. I wiped mine down along with the rest of the inside of the drum with acetone. Spray some silicone spray or other dry lubricant over and under the ring and on the surfaces inside the drum that it turns on. Reassemble. Super easy.
I don't have the ball bearings. I called a dealer a while back about the ball bearings and he told me if I wasn't racing then it was a waste of money, didn't need it. The installation manual says lube on the nylon bearing isn't recommended as it may attract dirt. Maybe some dry lube would help. I guess I could switch to the ball bearings, that would fix the problem but shouldn't have to.
Thanks CYANA, sounds easy enough. I pulled the pin and raised the drum while the mast was down last year, I'll do that again and clean the surfaces and try the dry lubricant. I'll check the lines also, now that I think about it that may be the problem. I have a 1/4" line spliced to a beefier line, about 3/8", the 1/4" is supposed to roll up on the drum and the 3/8" is supposed to stop at the drum, the 3/8" line is much easier to handle than the 1/4". This mod was done by the PO and I like it. I may have some or too much of the 3/8" rolling up on the drum.
I'm not sure what racing has to do with it... Racers and cruisers both have to unroll the sail and roll it back up. Maybe he figures cruisers don't care if it doesn't unroll all the way... I've been reading very strong statements about the addition of CDI's ball bearing option, on several sailing forums, and all I recall is aggravation before, followed by happiness after.
Just reporting what I've read--I had a different brand that, like most others, had bearings.
Actually it was a guy I talked to at riggingonly that talked me out of the ball bearing option 2 years ago. Thanks for the input guys, think I'll add the ball bearing option.
