As part of my replacement of the original 1985 stays, I ordered and received the adjustable backstay package from Catalina Direct. The parts are beautiful, but I need some guidance for installation. Catalina Direct tech support is out sick. There is a small picture on the C22 catalog page (similar setup), but something clearer would be preferred.

Does anyone have the Harken rig that could post a picture? A description would help. Is there anything tricky about it?

The original backstay was split, so I have two chainplates.

Thanks,
Brian

Brian,

Have you look at Harken's online catalog?

<s>Click on the "Manuals and Brochures" button on the left side of this screen and see page 18 in the parts catalog.</s>
Okay, I just looked up the item at CD. Did you install the new backstay with the single block on the end (tall rig kit)? If so, there should be a shorter wire already threaded through that single block on the backstay. Attach the toggle end to one of the chainplates. The other end of that short wire will have a fiddle block attached to it (or you attach it) and the fiddle block with becket and cam will attach to the other chainplate. Thread the line through the 2 Harken fiddle blocks starting at the becket on top of the fiddle block with cam and you should be good to go.

David, thanks. It is the tall rig kit that I have. The wire is not yet threaded through the block at the end of backstay, but I should be able to get it through after removing some hardware from one end or the other of the short wire.

From the picture, it looks like the the thimble end won't make it through the backstay block. If it doesn't, the block will probably have to be removed from the backstay, slip the short wire over the block, and re-install. Mind you, I haven't done this myself, I'm just "talking" from looking at the CD pictures.

Thanks for the directions. I had to take the block off of the backstay but that was no big deal to get back on. I will take a picture once the mast is up in case anyone else needs a visual cue. To the fiddle block with becket and cam I had to add an extra shackle since the shackle on the block would not fit through the chainplate holes.

Mast would be up now but the light test failed. Next step appears to be working my way back from the bulbs to the batteries to find the fault. I will be searching for the pin diagram that was posted some time in the past.

I just tested the steaming light on our C-22 mast with a 9 volt battery, touching the contacts at the base of the mast to the battery. It works. The bulb won't be bright buy it will light up. That will tell you if the problem is in the mast and/or light fixture, or in the boat wiring.
