So I am cruising up 75 so Pearl can finally get wet when I suddenly heard a rapid "thump-thump-thump. I immediately flipped off the cruise control and looked for a place to get off the road; in my peripheral vision, I noticed a familiar looking tire and wheel passing on my left. A friend lost a wheel last year, and up until then we thought that that only happened to people who didn't check off the trailer before leaving. Not true! The lug bolts were tight when I prepped the trailer the night before, but backed out in 80 miles. The mobile repair service that Trailer Assist called had to replace the hub because the bolts damaged the last few threads on the way out so new bolts couldn't be started. The tech that came out said it wasn't real frequent, but more common than you would think and much more common with lug bolts than nuts (and cheaper to replace a stud than a hub). I guess I'll replace the other three hubs so I have lug nuts on all of them this summer. I thought about buying one of the pre-assembled and lubed hub/bearing kits last winter - definitely would have saved an hour. All's well with no damage and no problems.

Yep, a group of us trailered from Pittsburgh to Sandusky . . . off comes a trailer wheel which promptly went over a hillside - never to be seen again. Luckily a nearby junkyard had a workable, temporary replacement.
Funny thing was, the trailer had just passed a state inspection at a local garage. The trailer owner wrote a letter noting the correlation between the inspection and wheel mishap. The garage wrote back explaining that when they remove wheels to inspect brakes - they remove the whole hub - not just the wheel . . .
to them we all said!
