After going out racing this morning, I discovered that our boat will not shift into reverse. Made it a little exciting parking the boat.
Has anyone else had an outboard that will shift nicely between forward and neutral, but won't go into reverse? It feels like a jammed linkage or something.
When I was a kid I had an 4 hp Evinrude that had no reverse. It rotated 360° instead. I remember thinking, "Why can't I get a real outboard that goes into reverse?" Now that I'm more familiar with the maintenance issues of a clutch and transmission, I recognize the elegance of its simplicity.

I have a 3.5 HP like that. Wonder if it would push the boat.

Possibly something to do with the tilt lock mechanism. Is the tilt lock engaged?
Futzed with the OB last night, and the tilt lock isn't the problem. Still open to ideas... The guys on iBoats suggest taking off teh lower end and seeing if it will shift.
Well I figured it out. A screw from teh bus bar in the engine had come loose and fell into the bottom of the engine, jamming the shift linkage. I had to remove the carb and starter to get at it. Now its all back together and I am off to teh boat to see if it still runs.
