Our Summer Series started on Saturday. I was on a family vacation at the Texas coast so my foredeck guy (Tim) skippered the boat with our regular genoa trimmer and a pick-up 3rd crew.
They took 2 bullets!
Maybe I'm becoming superfluous...

We weren't so lucky in this Saturday's race. We were tied for the lead, but the wind died, and, because of an adverse current both lead boats anchored side-by-side within 15 yards of each other, to stop drifting backwards. We sat there for 1 1/2 hrs., but both abandoned the race when we realized we couldn't round the first mark (14 nm) before the time limit expired, so we headed for home. On the way, we sailed through two separate, severe storms. I guess you could call it a total washout.

Here's to the guys who work at the pointy end.
I started on the bow of a J-35 the first year they came out (yes I'm that old!) and the owners I worked for moved to up the 40' class.
Wet days, freezing nights, being hauled up to the top of the mast in the middle of the night I was used to seeing the races from the front.
When I finally moved to the helm I concentrated on the "pointy" end, up wind and down and I knew the starts from in front of the forestay.
You learn alot away from the cockpit.

Hey guys.
We do not have a bid for the 2012 Nationals.
Love to race?
Know a bunch of boats that will get together in your area?
Step up and host a Nationals.
Conact me with a bid.
Best

Chin up Steve. I'm sure that you'll have better days with many 1st's.
Fortunately we don't have current to deal with but our fluky winds can cause just as much grief.

Good to hear the fun racing going on!!!!

We ended up taking 2nd behind the Oday32 boat for boat, but it was a fun day sailing! Tom Curran and DaveR took a 3rd place in Tom's Cat 25 boat for boat!

We got squeezed out at the weather mark by the big Oday after leading the 1st leg, but jumped right back into the lead after crossing his stern while setting the chute (which screwed up his set (fun!!!). We rounded the 2nd mark still in the lead and thought we could carry the chute on a close reach on the 3rd leg, but the wind had insreased and come around too much, so we tookl a fun knockdpown, and ended up dumpting the chute and accidently letting go the Spin halyard. Boy, talk anout the Keystone cops!!! My semi rookie foredeck crew is infinitely smarter about chute takedowns now <grin>. Was painful to see the Oday be able to carry her chute on the 3rd leg while we were only using a genoa.... Still it was a really fun race!!!(what was really painful was to endure their boasting at the clubhouse afterwards)

Cheers!

Yup, the C25 was well represented this past Sat, Chuck 2nd across the line and us 3rd (out of 12 boats). We held of a usually fast trailer stored, no bottom paint, San Juan 23 for the final two legs. They stayed within hailing distance most of the time. Here's a picture of DaveR at the helm crossing the line:

And my trader wife crewing with a friend (wife is the one looking at the camera):

It was a great day on the water, had good wind the whole race

Yep, it was a good day. I got us off to a terrible start, probably 8th across the line but Tom had us tack early for clean air and wound up 3rd by the first mark. I rounded up a couple times until I took Tom's advice and used the traveler to ease the main instead of the main sheet. A much more fluid motion and better control. Notice the fine control I had on my (Full Sail) beer though?

Ha! I love the Full Sail IPA.

Yes, using the traveler to ease the main is the ticket when trying to avoid a round up. We got smoked by a C-30 that we usually beat last Wednesday so we took 2nd out of five boats in Joint Venture in "B" Fleet. Next week is Dallas Race Week....

Thanks Derek. Actually, even though my post sounds a little whiney, the truth is that the storms gave us a little excitement to make up for the disappointing race. We ended the day bounding over the waves, with lots of wind, some thunder and lightning to provide a sound and light show, and we got home undamaged. All-in-all, that's a good day!

Check out this starting line from yesterday....

Joint Venture drifting at the start, luckily the wind picked up and we made it across the line about 15 minutes before the 9M cut off.

Super light wind for Dallas Race Week. We've taken a 3rd, DNE, 2nd and a 2nd so far. About 50 boats racing overall, 5 in our fleet. We declared spin and haven't been able to use it all week. :(. A modified and very well sailed MacGregor 26 has been giving us trouble all week.

Spin battle from last night's race, race 5 of Dallas race Week. Our spin on Catalina 27 Joint Venture is blue, red, orange and yellow, #170. What is interesting about this picture is you can see the Capri 25 Silver Wings (red white and blue spin)which was recently sold and featured in a thread on this forum. Nice to see her new owners out and racing that boat, hopefully they will join this forum.

We took 2nd again in our fleet, putting us in 2nd for the regatta in our fleet.

Yes, it was exhausting but fun. Friday Night was the Awards Ceremony. We won 2nd Place, Dallas Race Week, Fleet C. That's me on the left, Keelan, skipper and owner of Joint Venture, C-27 FK/SR, and Robert, our foredeck guy. On the last race it was just the three of us, good times.
