So, here we are on the home stretch to launch when we resinstalled the plastic drain plug on the Yamaha 9.9 and the head cracks off . It looks like I'll be able to back out the stem with an easy-out.
I assume it became brittle with age . . . it's a 1997 model.

Sounds more like they had problems with corrosion or people crossing threads. Plastic might be a good solution, but ya gotta get a new plug every 7 years. I've got a water pump running slow ( or drain clogged ) on my 84 outboard, so I guess I'll try to get the '74 running and change them out and work on the '84. It would be fun to get the '56ish running, but that is probably not worth the trouble.
We just fired up the '94ish 225hp and it ran good after sittin up for about 2 years ... skippin some on idle so I might change out the plug wires.
Yamaha outboard dealers are non-existent in Pittsburgh. The local dealer stopped carrying Yamaha products. You would think with our 3 rivers there would be adequate demand. I called two dealers that are 20+ miles away and I felt like I was imposing upon them when I asked if they would mail a replacement drain plug. I guess I'll deal with an internet supplier instead. So much for buying local.
Life sure would be a lot easier if Yamaha had just used a metal plug!
