I see the Houston sailors are talking about getting together and it reminded me of an idea I had earlier this spring.

During the weekend of 21-24 July, the Gathering of the Vibes will be taking place at Seaside Park in Bridgeport on Long Island Sound.

This is a four day outdoor concert dedicated to the likes of Grateful Dead successors, such as Darkstar Orchestra, Bob Wier and people like Wavy Gravy usually attend. A few years back several Crosby Still Nash Young band members (can't remember which) showed up. This year Elvis Costello will be on the bill and his wife Diana Krall is expected to be a surprise guest star.

Its not for everybody, but here's the link for the concert:

For the past several years if the weather is good, a buddy or two and I have rafted up just offshore the park and tuned into the local independent FM radio station WPKN/WPKM who simulcasts the music from the main stage. The area is near to Black Rock Harbor and Penfield Reef (041° 09', -073° 12') and is protected from west and north winds.

We'd bring our own adult refreshments and one guy has a grill, and we would not have to supply any other recreational activities if the winds were blowing the right direction!

Good way to hang with friends and chill on a Saturday afternoon and evening. Slips are available in the marinas nearby, with a few good anchorages nearby.

I plan to be there from about 2pm on Saturday, 23 July, with a rain date of Sunday. All are invited.

Later in the season, around Labor Day, there's a bayside concert in Northport / Huntington Harbor somewhere -- I hear it is a little more republican -- that might also be a great alternative.
