A couple of days ago I sailed on Chesapeake Bay in a 22 foot boat (not a Catalina) that had the usual fairlead tracks but also had jib cars. The wind was about 20 kts. gusting up to 25. It seemed to me that the jibs cars made controlling the jib easier than just using the fairleads. Does anyone have any advice about this? Thanks.

You have fairleads on the genoa track? Describe what you do have, or, preferable, post a photo.

I'd say YES. Any significant sized jib should be sheeted through a block--not a fairlead. The greater the tension and deflection angle, the more friction you'll get from the fairlead.

What I have is a 110% hank on jib (which I guess is actually a genoa), genoa tracks, and fairleads on the genoa tracks. The jib cars on the boat I sailed in the Chesapeake had tracks mounted on top of the cabin.

Inboard tracks on the cabin to are usually accompanied by outboard tracks and are only used for close sheeted windward work. Some cars have an inverted "U" bracket for attaching a block, could that be what you have? A photo would really be helpful. Regardless, life will be better and more fun with cars with blocks.
