Hi All,

I'm looking to outfit my C-250 with a spinnaker. I've found a couple sails on baconsails.com that seem affordable enough, but I'm completely confused about whisker/spinnaker poles. My boat has a masteye and a forward halyard, but no pole or spinnaker.

My question: What do I need in the way of a whisker pole or a spinnaker pole? What kind, size, brand do you all recommend?

Also, how have you rigged sheets, snatch blocks, etc. on your boats.

Thanks so much, everyone. Your advice is greatly appreciated.

If you have a CDI furler, the forward halyard you see may be the jib/genoa halyard, since the CDI has its own halyard system. A spinnaker halyard will run through a block at the top of the mast, in front of the forestay, not behind it.
You'll need to verify that.
The main difference between a spinnaker pole and a whisker pole is that the whisker pole is used with the jib or genoa and is often adjustable in length.
The spinnaker pole length is generally limited to the "J" dimension, or the distance from the base of the mast to the forestay. Both will attach to the mast ring.
To fly a regular spinnaker, you need a bunch of extra lines and hardware: topping lift and down haul lines for the pole, the previously mentioned spinnaker halyard, and spinnaker sheets that will run to blocks at the stern.
The topping lift line will run through a swivel block mounted on the front of the mast generally located near the spreaders and below your steaming light. The spinnaker down haul line will run through a swivel block mounted either on the foredeck or sometimes at the base of the mast.
If you choose the asymetrical spinnaker route, you can eliminate the pole. That's the short version.

For some reason the tech tip is not coming up again.

If I were to do this on a cruising boat I would get an asymetrical spinnaker. It is much easier to handle with fewer crew.
