Just put on new rigging. I'd like to put a block on the masthead for a drifter. I can't use the FOREWARD pin on the masthead because the drifter, unlike a spinn, tacks and jibes inside the forestay. Is there any reason NOT to attach the forestay to the foremost pin as opposed to being on the second pin?
I believe that a drifter is designed to use your jib halyard. My forestay is correctly attached to the forward pin because I don't have a spin halyard installed. I do have one on the boat and will move the forestay to the second pin next time I drop the mast in order to add the spin halyard. You might be able to fly a drifter like an asym spin., could be tricky.
I do use the jib halyard to put up the drifter, but I want to be able to drop one and put the other up more efficiently, without having crew or me go up and manually change the halyard over. I've got the mast down and am willing to invest a few $$$ in a block and halyard line, so why not?
If your forestay is already on the forward pin I would think it's not doing any harm. That's what I want to know.
I asked this same question a few months ago. My forestay/Roller furling is on the outside/forward pin. I put the block for my drifter on the inside pin and ran a second Halyard through it just for the drifter. The drifter tacks on the inside of my forestay and is flown without any luff attachments. No problems. Others on this forum fly theirs this way. You can probably move your forestay to the forward pin without any problems due to the fact that they are only about an inch or two apart and on an angle. They should be the same if not close distance from the bottom attachment so your mast will be in the same spot. I also installed the mast crane (CD) so I would have an attachment point out in front of my forestay in case I ever get a spinnaker
Scott, I did read your question a while back but I was not sure if your concern was specifically with the roller furling part of it. So I thought I'd just ask it again and clarify what my specific questions were. Thank you for restating what you did.
I went ahead and put the forestay on the forward pin and put the mast up, and like having the drifter block up there.
