I was researching boating accidents in Florida, WOW.

Look at the cost and the number of Recreational vessels.

A lot more powerboats out there too. Operators who had taken some level of boater education were half as likely to be in an accident, but that could be influenced by total numbers also. Data like that need to be evaluated from many angles.

I didn't see a table of accidents by vessel length and propulsion types and I'm to lazy to work it out for all vessels by propulsion type, but there are 116 powerboats for every sailboat in the 16'-26' range nationally. Factor that number in and we better have a minuscule accident rate

edit: The ratio for education/no education stayed about the same as Florida's, so even the minimally required education might offer some benefit

More Boating While Intoxicated tickets are given to power boaters in CT (adjusted for the ratio of power to sail).

Unfortunately the USCG stats nationwide state:

Most deadly per million hours of boating:
> Kayaks and canoes
> Jet skis and PWCs
> Small ski boats
> Small power boats
> Large power boats
> Small sail boats (centerboarders)
> Large sail boats (ballasted)
Least deadly per million hours of boating:

Could be that a lot of paddlers get run over by BWI power boaters (speed bumps!)

I read an article a few years ago about the parents of a teenager who died after smashing her PWC into the side of a sailboat suing the captain. The case was dismissed by the sitting judge. Our legal system does occasionally hold individuals responsible for their actions.
