Pardon the interruption, but my lady's son, brother, and nephew just won their class in the 2011 Transatlantic Race from Newport to Lizard Point in southern England on her brother's Baltic 46 (C&C design) Dawn Star. They started out dead last due to taking a northerly course that put them into a hole by themselves... then went back south and followed the pack... then back north where they started to gain. Soon they were second to last in class (6 boats) and overall (24), where they stayed most of the way across the Atlantic. Then, approaching Ireland, they were suddenly in second place (corrected) behind the class leader and 12th overall.

Most of the race they had no generator, so no refrigeration, no vacu-flush head , and no instruments. (Nutra-grain bar, anyone?)

When they crossed the line at Lizard Light in the mist just after 10pm Friday, having raced for just under three weeks, the initial corrected-time leader board showed them in second place (in class) by five minutes. (That's sorta like losing the Kentucky Derby by the width of a hair on the nose of the horse.) Later official calculations gave them the class bullet by 54 minutes (and 10th oerall)!

First overall (corrected) went to Puma Ocean Racing, a professional Volvo Ocean Racing 70' super-sled. Line honors went to the 100' Maxi Rambler. Maltese Falcon finished second (and last) in the Open class to a Gunboat 66 catamaran--neither was handicapped against the other boats under the IRC rule.

Here'e the article from the race home page.

Interruption over.
