I just finished crewing on a CS40 in this year's Screwpile Race from Annapolis to Solomons, MD. The race started, for our class, at 7:10 pm, and we finished shortly after sunrise the next morning. It's hard for me to believe, because we sailed at times, north, south, east and west, but it was closehauled sailing all the way. We could never use a chute. Winds were predicted to be light, but they were actually more like 10-14 kts all through the night. After the start, we watched a spectacular full moon rise over Kent Island, and saw it cross the sky through the night.

The boat is a good, fast sea boat with good racing sails, a deep keel and a good skipper and crew. It does it's best in long ocean races, having won it's class in a recent Bermuda Race, and recently it won the trophy for first-out-of-the Bay in the Annapolis to Newport Race. I'm sorry to say that, in this race, she didn't do so well. We found a long patch of light air out on the Bay, and our speed dropped from 6-8 kts down to about 1.5-2.5 kts for a couple hours, and that destroyed our finish time. Nevertheless, how can anyone complain about sailing a good boat through a beautiful, moon and starlit-night, with a bunch of nice folks who are equally awed by the splendor of it all? I can't think of any other sport in which everyone can be a winner, regardless of the scoreboard.
