Seeking info on sailing to/around Channel Islands NP; not having much luck searching here or on TrailerSailer. Is this a reasonable multi-day trip for the 250? We've sailed Chesapeke Bay, Lake Superior, Sea of Cortez and many smaller waters for multiple days, but I'm leery of the Pacific. Looking at putting in around Oxnard. Any advice appreciated.
Search the forum for Jim Baumgart or Indiscipline and channel islands. He as moved on, but all of his voyage, racing, and opinion posts will be helpful
Greg, I sail out of Newport. Although I have not sailed to Channel Islands, I have sailed to Catalina. What are your concerns? Yes it would be a multi day trip cuz there is so much to see. I have done some research and there is lot out there, but see no reason to be leery. I would love to make such a trip but would need a good week from Newport and that is hard to do for me plus getting crew to go. There are many great anchorages there with wind protection. Lets hope Jim chimes in as he had made the voyage from San Diego, even further south of me. Steve A
Greg, "Channel Islands" leaves a lot to the imagination. If in your shoes I would plan a week circumnavigating Catalina to get a feel. Going over to Catalina you are pretty well in the lee of the island so it is usually an easy sail or motor. The northward islands are less protected, water is colder and there are no facilities I am aware of. I sailed alongside Jim Baumgart to Catalina in 2005 and he sailed from there to Santa Barbara Island. Jim was pretty well experienced but the trip left him with a great deal of respect for the open ocean. He details that trip and several of his others on this forum and his website. http://www.indiscipline.org/cat25/indyIII.html On a side note I am leaving a week from tomorrow for 9 days at Catalina Island. Eighth year in a row I have made that trip.

I'm SO envious. Hoping one day I'll be in a position to do some week/two week sails.
Greg, my wifes Sunset Magazine just came in and there is an article re where to sail in So. Cal. It mentions an easy daysail from Oxnard to Anacapa Island as about 12 miles, less than 3 hours. It says you will be motoring in the AM as the wind pipes up in the afternoon. Also a kayak would be great to explore the rock caves and arches. I am sure if you do a web search, lots of info on the Anacapa's come up. Good luck.
Joe, that sounds great. Are you gonna sail around island and stay at various anchorages? Make sure you document and post. I too am jealous. Who do you have crewing? Steve A
Steve, I have three daughters. Two will make the trip over and stay four days and then my other daughter, and one of her girlfriends, will come over and replace the original two. We use the Catalina Express ferry out of Newport Beach for the transition. We will be spending time at Avalon, Two Harbors and Emerald Bay. All have moorings for $25-30/night. The first two locations are the only one with any provisioning capabilities. Emerald Bay is one of the prettiest bays on the west coast and has great snorkeling. the relatively shallow (as opposed to the rest of the island) water and white sand bottom accounts for its name. We originally started with 3 and four day trips but in recent years have extended it to a week or more. It's hard to leave once you get there.
On a side note, I was able to get all of the Catalina Express tickets and 18 holes at the Catalina Island Golf Course off Groupon for half-price. Love saving $$!
Joe, thats a great deal incl. golf. And what a great crew you got. My daughter gets sea sick and will only stay in harbor. Loved the 2008 pics. Very nice trip. Be aware of water in Avalon. Its in top 5 worst polluted in CA. Apparently the original pipes breaking down and sewer seeping into water. I made trip in Feb this year with one of our members John P. It was nice trip except for no winds! I will make trip latter this season but waiting for new engine. If you havent already, try to explore/sail backside of island. Its amazing. Enjoy Buffalo Milk.
