Since I never single hand I was thinking I'd prefer the cabin top winches for the jib sheets, but the previous owner moved to coamings. However, now that I've run my lines aft, I have triple clutches in front of the current cabin top basic winches. If i were to score a set of 14 or 16 ST winches, would the triple clutches be an impedement for proper sheeting? Has anyone else dealt with this?

Micheal, we have double clutches on both sides and have no issues with the original winches.
However, I'm guessing that the angle of the jib tracks could make a difference. Our boat is a 2005 model, and the jib tracks point directly at the shroud chain plates, on older models the track pointed inside the chain plates. Don't know if that makes any difference.

Put a loo roll or can of beans where the winches were originally installed and thread the sheets to see how the lay of the land is.

Michael, I think you'll find the self tailers on the deck to be more difficult to use for jib sheets than those on the coamings simply because they're further away. The point of putting them on the coamings is to make them close at hand for tacking and jib trim. Wish I had them. This is particularly true if you have a wheel.

I have clutches forward of my cabin top winches and they don't impede the winches. I would imagine that the placement (close/not-so-close) would be the issue. Mine are far enough forward to not interfere with sheeting but in proper alignment to allow the use of the winch for the mainsail halyard when necessary. If I were to move my winches to the coamings, I'd want a winch on the deck to help with that. Would only need one, though.

A "loo roll", Paul? Really? You can take the boy out of England but you can't take England out of the boy.

John - thanks. . . I wasn't clear. Tom Potter had moved the cabin top winches to the coamings and put some nice lewmar 6s on the cabin top. But I would like the option of sheeting on the cabin top because with the first mate and myself in the stern, it can get a little cramped, plus I just like the self tailers for raising the main, too. The decision was made easy because I can't say where or how, but I just bought two brand new Lewmar 16STs, in the box, delivered for $700.
