The marina manager and I (actually I watched him mostly) took the carb apart yesterday to clean out the low idle jet. Luckily, I didn't have to replace it, although I had a spare on hand. I wish I had taken the camera with me to show you guys what it looked like. The carb came off easily. The bowl had an amazing amount of crud in it, mostly varnishing...and I almost always ran the motor dry. However, the shape of the bowl is such that some gas will remain in there. He stressed to me the importance of using ethanol-free gas and to not use gas over 30 days old to minimize the junk build-up in the bowl. I hope to get the motor back on the boat today. Meanwhile, the 5 hp Merc has done a great job of getting me in and out of the slip and marina. I almost feel like leaving it on there, but the admiral likes the electric start on the Nissan!
P.S. When you pull the carb, be sure to remove the plate on the other side of the carb from the bowl and clean the air channel under that plate.

Pretty simple little deals aren't they? While I don't pretend to know the intricacies it's not real tough to take one apart and clean it up. The worst of it is imagining what you MIGHT run in to if you've never had one apart.
Probably easy enough unless you're doing it while the motor is on the boat and you drop parts in the water like my neighbor did this spring. That was before he learned about putting an inflatable kiddy pool under the motor while working on it.
