We looked at an 89' wing keel today and one thing had me curious. She looked a bit off her lines. She appeared to be down by the head (bow). The bottom paint was barely out of the water at the bow. There was little weight forward to account for it. The holding tank was empty. There was less than 60# of ground tackle in the locker.
She had a motor, batteries, fuel tank and assorted gear aft. It just seemed a little odd.
Any input would be appreciated. I sure would like to have an 89'.
I've got an 89 that doesn't sit like that. I don't know what to tell you other than have a survey done. You can also look at the signature of folks like me for web sites where we post pics and write about our boats. Go check the pics to see if that boat sits like the rest. And then it could just be a "not perfect" paint job I suppose.
My '89 doesn't sit that way, either. Dave is right about the paint. Depending on how diligent the painter is about masking, it can creep up, and the curved stern quarters are the hardest part to mask. Maybe high paint in that area gives the illusion that the boat is low at the bow. In any case, a good surveyor will get to the bottom (!) of the issue. It's worth the money. Good luck. Sol
Thanks for the replies. I should have photographed it. Won't make that mistake again. It was a three hour drive. I think we'll pass on this one. She needs a bit much for price. Would have been great timing though, we sold our c-22 just last weekend.
I would ask the owner what he/she stores onboard and where (hopefully not a 150 lb anchor and Hauser fit for a destroyer) and/or spend the minimal investment (compared to the value) for a proper survey.
Our boat's waterline seems a little off due to the weight of our outboard on the port side. I guess in 80 they were still mounting them there instead of starboard. We hand masked the waterline and raised it up 3 inches when we repainted so I know that ours is not perfect. Even most lines from the factory arent perfect when you look closely.
