Dave -- I too had a very disappointing season. While the weather over the summer was not the issue my schedule was. I clocked six hours sail time all season! My son used Limerick some, but he too was over scheduled this summer. When Irene came a knocking I removed the sails and do not plan on putting them back on as the only weekend I could have sailed this fall is this weekend --and it is raining. After this weekend its back to a heavy travel schedule. I'm not even quite sure when I will be able to motor the boat to the winter storage yard. All that said, what I am doing is figuring how to NOT end up in this situation next summer -- and wishing that like you I had a winter season in a warmer local !
Peter, My sympathies on your season. Now that the economy is bad with no sign of letting up, those who are out of a job can't afford to sail, but have all the time in the world. Those of us lucky enough to be working are so completely busy, there's never a day to get away at all.
I was hoping to get out today (we got a break between low pressure centers), but the honey-do list is too long. Tomorrow is expected to be rainy again. This week I'm away on assignment, so no after work sails for me.
But they say that the weather pattern is about to break up, so maybe next weekend we'll have some nice weather.
If you like, you can drive up to Milford next Saturday, and we can sail around here for several hours. I'll even buy the Italian deli sandwiches if you want to buy the adult beverages.
I'm still hoping to get in a few days off around Columbus Day weekend (Oct 8-10) the following weekend to camp out at the Thimble Islands.
Thanks for your thoughts and kind offer. Regrettably next weekend off to CA for ten days -- back for half a week and then off to China. But hold the thought, we will find a time if not this season then next to meet, greet and enjoy an afternoon sail!
This thread has caused me to re-think my marina lication -- again!. I'm going to move the boat in the spring to a much closer marina (20 minutes as opposed to 75 minutes away) The location is not as nice, fewer amenities at the marina, etc. But, since I'll be closer, I really won't be spending very many nights on the boat so I won't need the showers or the swimming pool. Another downside is that the new marina is right on Lake Erie as opposed to the Sandusky Bay. So, when the lake kicks up as it is wont to do, I'll not have the option to stay in the bay.
Well after surviving two tropical storms and a close call with a tornado, our lake here in upstate New York is full. Highly irregular for September. The lake area received the outflow from the tornado, winds estimated at 70 mph, tore some docks up but some boat owners stayed up there guarding the marina and retying dock lines. Kudos to them. Excess rainfall allows sailing well into October. Leaves are turning and makes for beautiful scenery.
I plan on moving Passage from the harbor to its winter storage on the weekend of Oct 29-30. This is late in our season, and we could get snow and ice at that time. Or, we could get late summer warmth on southerly winds, or fog -- you just never know. While you can't guarantee late October weather, especially in New England, I've spent several Columbus day weekends sailing, camping and spending time outdoors.

Dave, I get out there often, I'll look for Pearl. I'm berthed at the Naval Air Station. I kept my previous boat at Sabine Marina for many years.
Last year was pretty tough in Pensacola; it seemed like the wind alternated between 30 kts and 3 kts for the first month. The year before it rained more and was colder than I had ever seen; I was thinking of going to Ft. Meyers this year, but I really like Pensacola and decided to give it another year. I will be probably look at a C-30 at the navy marina this winter if it doesn't sell by then. Cold is relative when you live in Ohio.

I bet!! We had a big campout at Lloyd Park on Joe Pool....but next weekend, I'm planning to get out and overnight Saturday night.....

I've camped there, very nice.
We have a big regatta this weekend, will be racing a C-30 Mark II which is Darren (djdurrett)'s new boat. Then I realized I'm supposed to be in the recording studio Saturday morning. Life and its conflicts!
OJ, We are about 15 miles west of Lake George, Brandy was bought while slipped at Lake George. Slip fees for a 25 foot boat exceed $4000 dollars for a six month contract on Lake George if you can find one.

Ft Myers is nice, I lived aboard at Ft Myers beach for 3 years and worked as a charter captain, great sailing area but Pensacola's beaches are much nicer. I'm in slip C-86 if you get to the navy marina.

We rented two cabins and had a huge 2 day party......it was fun....those little cabins are pretty cool, but a bit too expensive IMHO...$280 for the weekend, each cabin.
Ended up with some good pics from Sunday's race. Wonder if the owner of Silver Wings, the Capri 25, is a member here? Glorious sailing. Two things, check out my new main, and I need to figure out how to tilt my Merc higher to get it out of the water.
Our season was also deplorable. We got out for maybe 4 regatta weekends and only 2 or 3 club races. Haulout is a couple weeks away. This weekend is strip the boat weekend, conflicting with the fair (where we show heritage poultry and get a little extra $$)
It has been a season of compromises and conflicts. And once again I find myself flirting with moving the boat to a proper club with a charter on owned land vs. the vagaries of being in a paper club on a city dock with a lease. Hopefully next year offers less uncertainty and fewer conflicts and I can just enjoy my time on the water.
Peter - tilt up that outboard!! You'll lose speed to drag on every wave!
Also the novelty flag thing is a fun conversation - your RC must be pretty relaxed to let it slide. Ours is similar, but a few folks take it a little far. This season I was reminded that the RRS says no flags apart from your class flag and had to remove my maple leaf, club burgee, and the C25 Association burgee.
We have at least one boat in our fleet who always flys a pirate flag from the backstay and another who flys a cocktail flag. I guess those don't represent an affiliation so they are ok. [shrug]

I know, that is tilted all the way back, I need to play with the mount and the motor to fix it.

I couldn't figure out how to use my autopilot for six years, and, finally, read the owner's manual, and was embarrassed to find that the answers to all my questions were right there. I'll bet there's a paragraph or two about tilting the motor.
As to tilting your Merc, if memory serves me (and sometime I get lucky ), there is an adjustment knob on the Merc around the mounting bracket that allows tilting in one of three positions when it is lifted. You just have to select the position you want 1, 2, or 3 (low, medium, high).
