Yesterday we went to the lake to make our first sail with the new to us boat. After all the struggles getting it in the water I hoped that all would go well. (Previous post) I spent some time installing new mooring lines then had lunch on the boat before we left the dock. I hit the key and did not hear the fuel pump come on but hit the glow plug button and then the starter and she kicked over. I went through the mooring lines with my wife and the procedure to leave and return to the dock while the engine was warming up. She has not been around boats before now. We motored out and headed in to a very light breeze and hoisted the main sail. So far so good. Started to unfurl the foresail and all looked like it was going to be OK, however it would not come all the way out & I discovered that the line to roll the sail back on was not free. Got it loose and the sail unfurled all the way then started to come down. It seems that I forgot to secure the foresail halyard. Got that taken care of and off we went. I did have to re route the Genoa sail lines to get them away from the safety line and stanchions. We then spent a few hours enjoying the day sailing in very light winds. Arrival back at the dock was uneventful. After the issues with the sails and taking the time to work that out I forgot to take in the fenders so spent the day sailing with the fenders hanging off the side. We are going again today and the wind is forecast to be a little higher. I am glad the first sail was in very light winds. Wonder what today will bring.

Thanks for sharing Howard. I think each of has experienced some of what you describe above - to more or lesser degrees!

You're just getting rigged while we are starting to de-rig here in the NE

Yup--fenders hanging... jib sheet on the wrong side of a lifeline... Done it all. My favorite, which happened to a friend I went out with (not me), was when he hoisted his jib on the way out, and he had hanked it on upside-down. Wouldn't have been so bad if we hadn't been in the middle of a big J-24 fleet that was heading out to a race. You just hate applause like that!

Sounds like a good "shake-down" cruise for both captain and boat. Congrats on a successful day on the water!

I'm not ashamed to say that I hanked on the jib upside down on my boat when my father-in-law still owned it.

We'll have to ask Chuck Shaw.

This is one of my favorite photos, I am finishing a cigar, looking wistful as the moon rises behind me. Two beautiful women are in the cockpit marveling at my mastery of my ship; not noticing the drifter is upside down. Yes that is the head at the bow stem. It flew great.... and and and caught more air with the belly up high yea, that's my story and I am sticking to it.

I launched Kaija in the spring and as I was sitting in the water, still hanging on the travelift straps warming up the outboard, the Travelift operator calmly looks down at me and asks: "So, do you HAVE a rudder?" Yep, I launched the boat with my rudder and tiller still secure in my garage, 60 miles away! Fortunately, I could steer to my slip with the outboard.

My first time out on my own boat, I hanked the 110 on upside down.
I sat there looking at it for several minutes before I figured out what was going on. We decided it was so funny that we sailed with it that way for the day.
