Here we go again.. worse than crack...

Help... my SHGF smoked me last time. ( and in the trial run ) Any tips are appreciated. Is the the correct forum for this post?

Are we losing Crew Strength every time we make a sail change?

Ray,
I think you do lose crew strength for every sail change. Check out the VORG Wiki for answers to a lot of questions.

You can get an extra boat for free if you want. Rita's decided against it (bear in mind she smoked me in the last race too).

My boat's are:
daveg 1 & daveg 2 (original, huh?)
Rita is: pointyshoes

I didn't realize when I signed up that they'd use the name I signed up with as my boat name, so make sure you sign up with the boat name you want to use, because you can't change it after the fact (or at least I haven't figured out how).

Less than five hours to the start of the round-the-island warm up race. You can set your sailing angle & sails now if you want. I'm currently set with the jib at 60 degrees, giving me about 29kph (I haven't figured out how to change it to knots yet, there was a way in the last game, I just don't remember what it was, and it's likely to have changed anyway).

Edit: figured out how to change from km/h to knots, there's a small bar along the bottom of the screen with little icons, click on the gear one, and you can change a bunch of options. You can also select which boat to drive by choosing the left most icon, just an arrow. That'll give you control over which boat is currently displayed.

My present course and the wind angles should allow me to run for more than half a day w/o any changes before the first gate. I'm eyeballing that gate at about 125-150km from the start. There's probably some way to measure, but dunno.

Good luck everyone. I'll look into making a group so we can race against each other like last time, but they've still got that option grayed out, maybe not till the real (fake) race.

Well, about five hours into the race and we're through the first gate. The wind is almost on our nose, and the speed had dropped to less than 8kts. I've turned one boat due east to sneak through the islands, and I think I'm going to turn the other one NWly to tack outside of the track, but gain lots of speed.

I'm through the second gate (in the wrong direction) on II, and headed almost exactly 180 to clear the gate and head back. On my 2nd boat at least. At one point, I was less than 300th in the race with this boat, but we stayed in the hottub too long and I overshot the mark by about 10 nm or so, but I'm doing 21kts in the right directoin now.

My first boat ended up on a bad tack and dropped behind, I should have continued east like I did in II and I'd have made better speed up to the strait between Palma Menorca & Majorca. #I is still about an hour from the gate and will need to have the 180 turn to cross it in the right direction as well, so I'll be up for another hour or so to make the turn. What'd you say about crack?

Rita's going to lay the mark from the other direction in a few more hours, she's doing about 15kts right towards the gate (and in the right direction, so she can let the boat sail by itself for a number of hours (read sleep).

David,

I'm in as Andiamo I and Andiamo II. Just remembered to play the game so I'm in 19,960 and 18,791 places. Looks like you're 3 and 11 miles to the finish and I'm 281 and 283 to the finish. I'm going to shoot the islands on a direct course to the finish.

Did you opt to buy the extra sails, waypoints, etc...?

Gary,
I didn't buy anything. I'm pretty sure both my boats have been rendered DNF, but Rita's boat finished cleanly. The race committee "changed" the rules about 22 hours into the game to where you had to go around Mallorca clockwise so you went through the 2nd gate from north to south. There were no instructions to that, it just said you had to transit the gate (not go around the island), so I went through it from south to north, did an about face and went back through north to south and continued the race (just like you can in a real race).

I'm pretty sure both of my boats have finished by now, but I've lost interest in this race. There is a fair amount of indignation by the original "winner" (who went the same route as me), and he's protested to the race committee, but I don't see anything coming from it. This is very-very similar to the last race where a bunch of folks went in between Sri Lanka & India and got disqualified for that leg. Since a VOR boat couldn't possibly transit Adam's bridge between the two, they should have just let those boats run aground, but that's old history.

The race committee has stated that as shown on the chart the course was supposed to be around the island clockwise, but the actual race briefing just said Alicante to Palma and back and gave no further instructions. Since the route shown goes around Izbiza & Formentor islands to the north, there's a fair amount of concern that if you went south around them (best winds when the race started), you'll be disqualified as well (that's what Rita did, but she went north between Mallorca & them to go around the "right" way.

<< (or at least I haven't figured out how). Regarding another boat name. >>

Probably not worth the trouble, but you can create a new email and sign in as another person/boat.

I went Sailing Saturday Morning and forgot to check my heading ... Still waiting for the droid app to come out. Pathetic to think I would hand over the helm while sailing.. so I could get on my phone and check my virtual heading!

I think that comes under the heading.. "I'd rather be sailing"

My Grlfrnd texted me ..You are aground! Laughing, my reaction was... what is she talking about? We're not aground...

Waypoints work great...

Oh.. My boat is Swords1 apparently.. I've created another email with Gmail and I'll probably login when the big race starts as Redeye and I'm sure that is already in use so I'll probably be Redeye007 or some sort.

We are looking at goin to Miami in May to see the boats, but the SHGF has such a race schedule that we probably can't get the time off. SHGF has gotten the Tri Bug so I'm support and I got some time off the hook shile she trains, unless she wants me to go, which is more often than not.

Congratulations David on such a strong finish. I really enjoy the big race. Bored with these trials, but happy if they get it debugged.

David...

I've got it... So .. My SHGF's boat (Labyrinth 1) always does well, and she is a Web Master and spends all her time with a powerbook in front of her.. I'd bet she has more hours in the game that anyone.

So you follow Labyrinth and I'll follow Rita... No one will know and we will both look like we've spent hours evaluating the winds, currents and our compass...

Not really.. but the thought just makes me laugh...

Wait.. It gets even funnier... I'm on the east coast.. you are on the west coast.. Share logins and I'll check you boat in the morning, and you can check mine in the evening.

Not that we would really do that but the SHGF would be smoked!

Hah, it might have been a good idea to have someone on the east coast, I stayed up till nearly 3am the other night to shepherd my boat through the gate. They still haven't DNF'd either of my boats, not that it really matters.

I've added your boat to my watch list & sent a friend request, but I can't find your SHGF's boat is it spelled differently from "labyrinth"?

I'm surprised more folks aren't chiming in, last time around there were probably close to a dozen or more of us flailing our way around the world. They were even giving away prizes for the best times, etc.

It looks like they charge $250 for some items but it's actually only credits you're spending. Not sure how you earn them though.

Yeah, not sure how it works either, and that's why I didn't buy any for the preliminary race, figured I could use them in the real race. Lots of complaints about the waypoints not working properly, and you can't change them after they've been set, you have to use another one.

I went the entire race last time w/o buying anything, but they didn't give you "$1000" to spend for free either. It seems like I remember the full meal deal for the entire race came out to about $80 US, which works out to less than $10 a month.

Labyrinth 1

<<< Stayed up till 3 >>>... please... I'm not gonna go that far with this game. Of course, now I say that... My waypoints worked.

I'm gonna start 2 boats in the big race and use one as a trial to try out different functions and then let that boat adrift. Seems like the only way you really get behind in the race is doing something wrong trying to find out how it works. Or ... keeping an island to port ( before a ruling )

Ouch!

I think lots of players dropped out due to lack of sleep....

You don't want to go there.. Very addictive... Oh Well..

www.volvooceanracegame.com

You were warned..

When you register, your logon will be the name of your boat, so try for something you like.

Looks like I'm starting with Redeyes ( which now looks like "ready yes" to me )

THe SHGF wants to know:

"Ask your forum buddies what CET means to US!"

What time zone is that?

Boat Name Stephanos? Sweet.. I love the game. But it is just a game and the big race is a long time so I get disenchanted at times.

But anyhoo... welcome to the enchanted part!

CET stands for Central European Time and is GMT +1.

EST begins this weekend, which will be a 6 hour offset from CET (it's 5 right now, but time falls back this Sunday morning). That means a 9 hour offset for those of us on the left coast. The race starts at 4am our time a couple of days from now. I think that's the right direction... Midnight GMT is 16:00 PST, so at GMT+1, midnight would be 15:00 PST here.

There's nothing to do until 24 hours before the start of the game except register and add friends. Probably should read the wiki as well.

Just learned something, the friend request applet is case sensitive, so you can't just search for "labyrinth", you have to search for "Labyrinth". I've added the SHGF (why didn't she use that name?) as well as Stephanos as friends and awaiting confirmation. And I think Redeyes is already listed as a friend?

Here are our marching orders for the first leg of the real race. These are far more thorough than the preliminary race, I think they learned their lesson.

From the VORG Facebook post this morning:

Briefing LEG 1:

Leg 1 starts November 5 at 14:00 CET (13:00 UTC)

Start Position (Green Flag): (N 38 20 20 / W 0 28 32)

Gate 1 (Gibraltar gate): indicated with yellow flags marked with “1”.
Gate 1 is a line between 2 buoys, both standing ashore: You have to pass gate 1 from East to West, leaving Gibraltar to STARBOARD.

Gate 1 - Position buoy 1: (N 35 54 14 / W 5 20 45)
Gate 1 - Position buoy 2: (N 36 06 40 / W 5 20 45)

Gate 2 (Fernando de Noronha gate): indicated with yellow flags marked with “2”.
Gate 2 is a line between 2 buoys, both standing a shore: You have to pass gate 2 from North to South; leaving Fernando de Noronha to PORT.

Gate 2 - Position buoy 1: (S 3 52 35 / W 32 28 37)
Gate 2 - Position buoy 2: (S 3 52 35 / W 38 22 14)

Finish (Cape Town): indicated with checkered flags.
The Finish is a line between 2 buoys, both standing ashore.

Finish - Position buoy 1: (S 33 53 46 / E 18 25 32)
Finish - Position buoy 2: (S 33 52 53 / E 18 29 13)

Leg 1 will close December 7 at 14:00 CET (13:00 UTC)

Start time on the left coast will be 6am (ignore my time calculation in the earlier post):

Palma (Spain - Majorca) Saturday, November 5, 2011 at 2:00:00 PM CET UTC+1 hour
Seattle (U.S.A. - Washington) Saturday, November 5, 2011 at 6:00:00 AM PDT UTC-7 hours
Corresponding UTC (GMT) Saturday, November 5, 2011 at 13:00:00

You can calculate your start time in your time zone here.

Bear in mind that daylight saving time doesn't change till Sunday morning, after the race has begun, but the calculator above seems to take that into account.

Either they haven't released an iPhone version, or I can't find it. There's a real-race tracker, but nothing for VORG, at least not yet. I also don't currently have a boat and only $100 in the bank, which isn't good for much.

Edit: Looks like they've posted the iPhone version, but it doesn't show up on my phone yet. I can find it in iTunes though, so I can sync it to my phone tonight when I get home from work that way.

Edit redux: It's available in the App store now, just downloaded and logged on to make sure I could. It's a bit wonky, but it's better than getting up in the middle of the night to change course, when our phones are right next to the bed.
